Lead Blood BankTechnologist in Chicago, Illinois at Saint Anthony Hospital

Position Purpose: Assumes responsibility for Quality Assurance and systems control, supervision of reporting staff, evaluation, consoling, teaching, training and problem solving. Performs routine and complex analyses in laboratory sections such as Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Blood Bank.

Essential Functions (list in order of importance including measures)

1. Responsible to the supervisor for the accuracy, quality and timeliness of data provided to the physician. Responsible for all Quality Control (Assurance) functions pertinent to the section. Exhibits a high degree of professional excellence characterized by sound judgement, reliability, initiative, flexibility and high standards of ethics. Monitors and supervises all staff performing functions in his or her section.

2. Responsible to the administrative director for the continued operation and quality of technical functions. Responsible for certain administrative functions in the absence of the administrative director. Assists in ongoing administration and management of the department.

3. Reviews and approves final test reports, quality control results and related procedures. Responsible for the full quality assurance program of the section. Organizes work flow of the shift, directing reporting technologists in their work assignments and responsibilities.

4. Set up all procedures and equipment. Writes and revises all procedures and protocols. Reviews technical manuals annually and as required, maintaining all current procedures.Recognizes and solves technical problems of the laboratory by identifying causes, synthesizing alternatives, determining solutions and implementing solutions. Directs staff in corrective activities.

5. Teaches reporting staff in both theory and techniques. Provides adequate training and instruction for performance of test procedures. Acts as a technical resource for the director and

supervisor, providing full theoretical and technical information regarding testing performed in their area of responsibility. Is actively involved in professional activities to maintain expertise in their section.

6. Provides technical directions for the laboratory as related to new equipment, alternative and/or new procedures. Evaluates equipment and procedures in relation to technical accuracy, clinical needs and section requirements.

7. Coordinates laboratory activities and functions. Assists in establishment and monitoring of safety and infection control protocols.

Marginal Functions (list in order of importance)

Ø Performs both essential and marginal job functions in a safe manner as identified by Saint Anthony Hospital and the respective department while adhering to the Hospital’s confidentiality norms and standards. Actively and consistently demonstrates the core values of Saint Anthony Hospital in all interactions with others.

Ø Assumes responsibility for knowing and maintaining established hospital and departmental objectives, policies/procedures including general sanitation, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

Ø Participates in performance activities including problem identification, data collection, solution selection, implementation and evaluation. Also assists in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies as appropriate.

Ø Participates in staff meetings and other inservices, meetings or committees as required.

Ø Prepares any and all special projects or maintenance of required management systems

Ø Maintains professional knowledge base through literature reviews, seminars, workshops and meetings throughout the calendar year. Obtains yearly CE hours as required. · Minimum of 3 years experience in all areas of the lab, including Blood Bank.

· Minimum of 2 years previous supervisory experience.
