Director, Government Relations

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Government Relations based in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to shape public policy strategies and influence legislative outcomes across a key U.S. region.
The position leads government relations initiatives that support business priorities within a highly regulated industry.
You will build meaningful relationships with policymakers, government leaders, industry associations, and external stakeholders.
The role combines strategic thinking, political analysis, stakeholder engagement, and hands-on execution.
Working closely with internal experts and leadership teams, you will translate policy developments into actionable business insights.
This is a high-impact opportunity for an experienced government affairs professional to drive advocacy efforts and strengthen organizational influence.

Accountabilities:

The Director, Government Relations will be responsible for developing and executing regional government affairs strategies, building influential partnerships, and ensuring alignment between policy initiatives and business objectives. The role requires strong political awareness, strategic communication skills, and the ability to navigate complex regulatory environments.

  • Develop and execute state-specific government relations strategies to influence legislation, regulations, and policy proposals that support organizational priorities.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with executive branch officials, government leaders, state legislators, legislative staff, and regulatory stakeholders.
  • Monitor, analyze, and communicate the impact of proposed and enacted legislation, regulations, and policy changes in collaboration with internal subject matter experts.
  • Identify political trends, opportunities, and risks that may affect business operations and contribute insights to broader government relations strategies.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with trade associations, business organizations, community partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Manage relationships with external government affairs consultants, contract lobbyists, and other regional partners.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable lobbying, ethics, and government relations regulations while educating internal stakeholders on requirements.
  • Prepare clear briefings, reports, and recommendations to support leadership decision-making.
  • Manage multiple priorities, projects, and stakeholder relationships while meeting strategic objectives and deadlines.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an experienced government relations professional with a strong understanding of public policy, legislative processes, and stakeholder engagement. This individual should demonstrate the ability to influence decision-makers, communicate complex topics effectively, and operate successfully in a dynamic and highly regulated environment.

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, government relations, business, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in government relations, lobbying, public affairs, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience developing and executing advocacy strategies across state-level government environments.
  • Strong knowledge of political landscapes, legislative processes, regulatory frameworks, and their impact on business priorities.
  • Experience working with elected officials, legislative staff, regulatory agencies, and government stakeholders across multiple states.
  • Experience within highly regulated industries is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to analyze complex policy issues and translate them into clear business implications and recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present policy topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work under deadlines, and independently drive strategic initiatives.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with internal teams and external partners.
  • Ability to travel regularly within the assigned region.
