Position Summary

The UNM College of Education and Human Sciences, comprised of five academic departments, is a future-oriented, dynamic professional school organized to reflect the following values: Advocacy, Building Professional Identities, Collaboration, Building Strong School/University Partnerships, Interdisciplinary Inquiry/Scholarship, and Teaching and Learning.

The TEELP Department is one of the largest in the College with the uniqueness of having teacher education and educational leadership faculty addressing Pre-K-12 and higher education needs together as an academic unit. The Department has both undergraduate and graduate programs.

The successful candidate will have completed all MA coursework (Lecturer II) or all requirements for the Ph.D. or Ed.D. (Lecturer III) in literacy education, language arts, curriculum and instruction, and/or closely related fields by the starting date of the appointment.

Responsibilities: The Lecturer II/III faculty will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in teacher education. In accordance with the departments approved workload policy, Lecturers will have a 4/4 teaching load. Other responsibilities may include advising masters students, serving on masters exams and theses; serving on department and university committees; contributing to program partnerships and initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Earned M.A./M.S./M.Ed. and/or doctorate from an accredited university in LITERACY, LANGUAGE ARTS, Curriculum and Instruction, or a closely related field. All requirements for the MA or doctorate must be completed by the start date of the appointment.

Minimum of three years of experience as a K-8 LITERACY/LANGUAGE ARTS educator.

Experience with a variety of course delivery methods.

Preferred Qualifications:

Minimum of five (5) years of experience teaching LITERACY OR LANGUAGE ARTS in public K-8 schools in urban, rural, or high need districts.

Experience navigating the complexity of the current Science of Reading context across Elementary and Secondary schooling and teacher preparation writ large.

Evidence of excellence or potential for excellence in teaching courses in Elementary LITERACY/LANGUAGE ARTS education, LITERACY/LANGUAGE ARTS methods, or related fields.

Ability to propose and develop innovative courses and programs that support professional learning for teachers around LITERACY/LANGUAGE ARTS that would also be embraced as relevant and timely for the Peoples of New Mexico.

Demonstrated commitment to designing and teaching LITERACY/LANGUAGE ARTS curriculum that honors, strengthens and integrates New Mexicos multiple heritage languages.

Five or more years of experience with or knowledge of LITERACY/LANGUAGE ARTS education in urban and/or rural and Indigenous settings as well as with Martinez/Yazzie student populations including Hispanic, Indigenous, Economically Disadvantaged, Multilingual, Special Needs.

D emonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the universitys mission to serve local and global communities.
