Position_Description :
Job Overview
- Provide construction and quality management support for highway heavy civil construction projects to facilitate the planning, execution, and closeout of designated projects while ensuring compliance with contract requirements, company standards, and quality objectives. This role supports Project Managers with project administration, coordination, cost control, scheduling, and documentation. The Assistant Project Manager will work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Field Engineers, Safety Team, and Quality personnel to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become a professional project manager while promoting a culture of quality and continuous improvement throughout project operations.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform all functions of the estimating and bidding processes including ordering bidding documents, preparing contract documents for bid submittal, and maintaining and updating estimating database (May assist the Project Manager).
- Assist Project Manager with Contract preparation and administration to include project cost codes, budgeting, and project schedules.
- Assist Project Manager to ensure project close out requirements are met and that all monies due are collected in a timely manner.
- Communicate with project supervisory personnel and representatives from project Owners, Subcontractors, and Vendors to coordinate various phases of construction effectively.
- Advise the supervisor and the Project Manager of potential problems, work interferences, schedule difficulties, construction deficiencies, or other quality related issues. Assist in circumventing and resolving such problems when needed.
- Calculate various statistical data such as quantity take-offs, material price lists, labor costs per man-hour, equipment, etc.
- Maintain files of working documents for a back- up to estimating figures.
- Assist in the monitoring of conceptual estimates with actual cost data.
- Assist the supervisor in planning the work schedule, determining manpower levels, and arranging for the assignment of project personnel.
- Oversee and/or process day-to-day administrative items (i.e., expense reports, supply requisitions, personnel transaction forms, operating budgets, etc.) per the supervisor’s authorization.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting, record keeping, and documentation. This may include job cost quantities, regulatory reporting requirements, payroll reports (timecards), truck quantities, approval of vendor invoices, safety reports, daily logs, and other documentation.
- Support implementation of the company’s Corporate Quality Management Program.
- Observe and report any failures to comply with Company policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as needed.
Work Environment
- This is an in-person position with no hybrid or remote work. The work environment includes a traditional indoor office environment and outdoors on rough terrain at construction sites. There is exposure to various weather conditions, noise, dust, and other materials. The work environment is in areas where heavy equipment, power tools and traffic is present. There is exposure to heights up to 50 feet and depths of up to 80 feet at the construction sites.
Physical Demands
- The physical demands that are described are representative of but not limited to the physical exertion generally required to perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time while using a keyboard. They are frequently required to stand and walk. They are occasionally required to lift, carry, push, pull, and reach overhead materials up to twenty pounds, along with frequent gross manipulation using their hands. The visual requirements include demonstrating or having vision corrected to 20/20. In general, this position includes sedentary work that primarily involves sitting and/or standing as well as repeating motions that include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
Position Requirements :
Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or equivalent education and experience in highway and heavy civil construction.
- Be able to understand construction drawings, project specifications, RFI’s, submittals and shop drawing reviews, change orders and contract modifications, and construction quality management processes.
- Organization and attention to detail, written and verbal communication, leadership potential, proficient in Microsoft Office Software.
- Workload may include travel and may require extended hours, including weekends and/or nights.
- On call to resolve emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
- This position is intended to provide training, over a period of several years, to independently manage increasingly larger and/or more complex projects. Project assignments and opportunities will depend on available work.
- Experience using HCSS Heavy Job or similar Project Management software a plus.
