Job Description

Position Title: Surgical Scrub Technician
Reports to: ASC Nurse Manager
Department: Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
Status: Full-time | Non-exempt

Position Summary

The Surgical Scrub Technologist (Tech) is part of the surgical team in the operating room, responsible for assisting the surgeon during procedures by anticipating the surgeon’s needs to make sure that the procedure is executed as smoothly and efficiently as possible. They prepare and organize the operating room in advance of surgery, clean equipment, maintain a sterile environment and ensures that the operating room maintains an atmosphere that respects the dignity and individuality of each patient.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Prepare and organize the operating room equipment, instruments, and supplies as required for various surgical procedures.
  2. Perform room set up and instrument set up while confirming that the correct instruments and supplies are properly prepared for the procedure. Supports the OR team with instrument cleaning and sterilization.
  3. Check all required instruments for proper functioning prior to operation and reports any malfunctioning/broken equipment to the circulator prior to the start of any surgical procedure.
  4. Set up a sterile and sanitary environment and maintain the sterile field for the patient during procedures.
  5. Recognize breaks in sterile technique and takes corrective action.
  6. Provide patient-centered care before, during and after surgery by: recognizing and taking steps to reduce patient anxiety, providing care in a warm and caring manner, limiting unnecessary conversations and maintaining a professional environment.
  7. Facilitate successful completion of surgery by providing the surgeon with the correct instrumentation and general assistance as needed (e.g., irrigation, cutting suture, etc.)
  8. Remain attentive during procedures and anticipate surgeon and patient needs during and following the procedure.
  9. Utilize correct body mechanics in moving, transporting, and positioning patients, stretchers, and/or tables in order to prevent injury to patient and others in the operating room.
  10. Break down and clean the operating room following the surgical procedure: remove trash and participate in stocking and restocking medical supplies.
  11. Inspect, replace, and sterilize medical instruments following surgical procedures in preparation for the next procedure.

Working Environment and Physical Requirements:

This role performs work indoors primarily in an operating room or general office setting with sufficient lighting. May experience continuous noises while working around machinery and equipment with moving parts. Will work in close proximity to others and may be exposed to offensive odors. Required to wear company issued personal protective equipment (PPE)

  1. Daily operation of specialized ASC equipment.
  2. Required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  3. Ability to reach and extend both arms and grip equipment with hand and finger dexterity.
  4. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. pounds regularly.
  5. Ability to move safely and stand for long periods of time on a hard flooring surface.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma or equivalent required.
  2. Experience in a healthcare setting required.
  3. Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Medical Assistant program strongly preferred.
  4. Familiarity with ophthalmic procedures strongly preferred.
  5. Excellent communication, teamwork, and customer service skills.
  6. Proficient in EMR systems, Microsoft Office, email, and clinical documentation.
  7. Maintains patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and practice policies.
  8. Ability to work independently and collaboratively with precision and timeliness.
  9. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  10. Professional demeanor and commitment to compassionate, patient-focused care.
  11. Self-motivated and takes initiative to complete responsibilities efficiently.
