About the Role:
The Preconstruction Estimator plays a critical role in the early stages of construction projects by providing accurate and comprehensive cost estimates that inform project feasibility and budgeting decisions. This position involves analyzing architectural and engineering plans, specifications, and other documentation to develop detailed quantity takeoffs and cost projections. The estimator collaborates closely with project managers, architects, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure all aspects of the project are considered and potential risks are identified. The ultimate goal is to deliver competitive and realistic estimates that support successful project bids and contribute to the overall profitability of the company. This role requires a strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and market pricing trends to anticipate costs effectively and support strategic decision-making.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in construction estimating, preferably in preconstruction roles.
- Proficiency in construction estimating software such as ProEst, Sage Estimating, or similar tools.
- Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and industry standards.
- Excellent analytical, mathematical, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM) and integrated project delivery methods.
- Familiarity with local and national building codes and regulations within the United States.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Professional Estimator (CPE) or Associate Constructor (AC).
- Experience working in diverse construction sectors including commercial, residential, and infrastructure projects.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills to effectively interact with clients and subcontractors.
Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze project plans, specifications, and related documents to prepare detailed cost estimates.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and pricing for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor services.
- Collaborate with design teams, subcontractors, and suppliers to gather necessary information and validate assumptions.
- Develop and maintain cost databases and estimating templates to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Prepare and present comprehensive bid proposals and reports to internal stakeholders and clients.
- Identify potential risks and opportunities in project scope and provide recommendations to mitigate cost overruns.
- Stay current with industry trends, material costs, and labor rates to ensure estimates reflect market conditions.
- Support the preconstruction team in value engineering and constructability reviews to optimize project costs.
