This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Legal Counsel – Energy in Canada.
This is a senior, business-facing legal role at the heart of energy transition and environmental commodity markets. You will support complex, high-value commercial transactions across renewable fuels, environmental credits, and energy trading activities, working directly with traders, commercial leaders, finance, risk, and operations teams. The role combines hands-on drafting and negotiation with strategic legal guidance in fast-moving and evolving markets. You will play a key part in structuring scalable contractual frameworks for emerging products and regulatory regimes. In addition, you will lead and mentor a small legal team while remaining deeply involved in day-to-day deal execution. This is an opportunity to shape legal foundations for innovative, cross-border energy markets within a highly commercial environment.
You will be responsible for leading the drafting, negotiation, and execution of complex commercial agreements while supporting business growth across energy transition and environmental markets.
- Draft, review, and negotiate high-value commercial agreements across renewable natural gas, biofuels, feedstocks, and environmental credits
- Lead structuring and negotiation of commodity trading, supply, offtake, and structured transactions
- Advise business teams on contractual risk allocation, delivery terms, pricing, performance obligations, and dispute resolution mechanisms
- Support emerging and first-of-kind transactions requiring adaptable legal and commercial frameworks
- Develop scalable contract templates, playbooks, clause libraries, and negotiation standards
- Translate evolving regulatory requirements into practical contractual and business guidance
- Support compliance with sanctions, trade regulations, and internal governance policies
- Oversee legal entity management, corporate governance, and outside counsel engagement as needed
- Provide leadership, coaching, and guidance to a small in-house legal team
The ideal candidate is a seasoned commercial lawyer with strong experience in energy, commodities, or regulated markets, combining deep legal expertise with strong business acumen and leadership capability.
- Law degree and membership in good standing with a Canadian provincial or territorial law society
- 10+ years of legal experience with significant commercial drafting and negotiation responsibility
- Strong background in energy, commodities, renewable fuels, environmental credits, or related regulated sectors
- Proven ability to independently structure and negotiate complex commercial agreements
- Strong understanding of commodity trading structures, risk allocation, and contractual frameworks
- Experience working closely with commercial, trading, finance, risk, and operations teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; French is an asset
- Leadership experience, including mentoring lawyers or managing small legal teams
