Job Description

Purpose of the Position:

The South China Morning Post is seeking an experienced and enterprising senior reporter from Malaysia to join our Asia desk, as we expand our coverage of diplomacy, security, politics, economics and culture across the region. You will be based in Kuala Lumpur and lead a team of journalists shining a spotlight on Malaysia news for a regional audience, particularly on tensions and opportunities related to China's growing influence in Asia.

This position requires someone who can work independently, dive into different topics, and be equally comfortable with writing breaking news stories and filing analyses and long reads for SCMP.com and our Sunday magazine, This Week in Asia. Your job title will correspond to your level of experience and you’ll report to the Asia Editor.

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver insightful, timely and balanced coverage on Malaysia, from spot news to long reads that are relevant to our regional audience
  • Collaborate with colleagues to produce stories across different media platforms, including video and graphics
  • Maintain a network of sources around the region, including highly-regarded commentators from different sectors
  • Harness on-the-ground knowledge to suggest and pursue original story ideas

Skills and Experience that will lead to success:

  • At least five years of experience in a media organisation, preferably in a wire service
  • Familiarity with Malaysian news, especially politics, with a keen understanding of and interest in regional affairs, especially China's relationships with Southeast Asia and wider Asia
  • A willingness to focus on several broad areas of coverage
  • Strong critical thinking skills, solid news judgement and an ability to file clean copy
  • Chinese-language skills or fluency in an Asian language would be a plus point
