Crisis Counselor – Crisis CareHeritage Behavioral Health Center – Macon, DeWitt & Piatt Counties

Full-Time | Mobile Crisis Response | Community-Based Role

Position Available on 1st Shift (7 am-4 pm) and 2nd Shift (3 pm - 12 am)

Sign On Bonus Eligible:

New Hires: Sign On Bonus $5000 for one year commitment

Internal Transfers: Transfer Bonus $2500 for one year commitment

Heritage Behavioral Health Center is seeking compassionate, dedicated Crisis Counselors to join our Crisis Care Team. These full-time positions provide life‑changing support to individuals experiencing mental health or substance use crises in a variety of community settings—including emergency departments, community agencies, and client homes.

Our Crisis Care program responds to anyone, anywhere, and at any time, offering timely assessment, de-escalation, counseling, linkage to services, and aftercare support. Crisis Counselors play a vital role in helping individuals experiencing distress such as depression, anxiety, substance use concerns, or other behavioral health needs.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide face-to-face, phone, and virtual crisis intervention in a timely and supportive manner
  • Work with children, adolescents, and adults across a wide range of crisis situations
  • Engage individuals admitted to inpatient psychiatric settings and link them to community supports
  • Assist with involuntary admission processes at the Macon County Court
  • Complete pre-admission screening assessments for nursing facility referrals
  • Maintain strong relationships with referral sources and partner agencies
  • Collaborate with internal and external providers—including crisis teams, case managers, counselors, psychiatric providers, and clinical leaders—to ensure coordinated, effective care
What You BringKnowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to engage individuals in behavioral health treatment during high-stress situations
  • Flexibility—each day looks different, and crisis needs vary
  • Knowledge of behavioral health diagnoses
  • Ability to work with individuals with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, or dual diagnoses
  • Understanding of psychiatry, medical services, and community resources
  • Excellent decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently in the community and collaboratively within a team
  • Ability to navigate an electronic health record
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and growth
Education & Requirements
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a human services–related field (required)
  • Must meet criteria to function at minimum as a Mental Health Professional (MHP)
  • Master’s-level Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHP) must obtain licensure within 2 years of employment
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and automobile insurance required
  • Experience in crisis services strongly preferred
Salary Range

High School with supervised behavioral health experience: $23.00/hour

Bachelor's Degree in human services, social work, psychology: $25.00/hour

Master's Degree in human services, social work, counseling, or another approved field: $60,000/annually

LSW/LPC: $64,000/annually

LCSW/LCPC: $67,000/annually
