About This Position

Statement of Purpose:

To provide essential support (primarily specimen collection) functions for the technical and managerial personnel to provide accurate and timely laboratory tests to assist the clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Receives patients, ensures confidentiality, and completes proper forms prior to sample collection by technical personnel.
  2. Performs venipuncture on adults and children in an efficient and painless manner as possible.
  3. Perform needle stick blood collection on neonates in an efficient, painless and timely manner as

possible.

  1. Perform finger sticks in an efficient and painless manner as possible.
  2. Draw specimens at the appropriate time, as ordered, and according to policy.
  3. Instructs patients about the proper collection of urine and other body fluid specimens.
  4. Notifies provider of any discrepancies or questions on a patients order for testing.
  5. Meticulously labels and identifies all specimens in the presence of the patient using two patient

identifiers; Name and Date of Birth.

  1. Manages patients that need to return samples to the lab.
  2. Registers outpatient and outreach patients and does order entry for appropriate testing.
  3. Assists in training and orientation of new phlebotomists.
  4. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to all ages of patients as documented by training and competency assessment.
  5. Manages pending in-patient phlebotomy draw list throughout your shift.
  6. Communicated to lead lab assistant/Technologist/and or Unit RN any inpatients you were unable to obtain blood samples from.
  7. Maintain phlebotomy room and trays in a socked, clean and sanitary manner.

EDUCATION: High school graduation or equivalency, plus up to one year’s schooling in a medically related area preferred Employee must have a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. ASCP phlebotomy certification preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Three months’ experience as a phlebotomist in a hospital or related setting.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with patients, nurses, physicians, and other personnel as related to the performance of specimen collection and/or performance of laboratory tests.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Requires daily use of initiative and judgment, especially in dealing with patients. Walks and stands up to half of the day.

EQUIPMENT USED: Daily use of computer for order entry, extensive use of needles and syringe type blood collection tubes.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Will be exposed to unpleasant sights, sounds, and odors during patient contact. Employee will have continuous exposure to infectious or potentially infectious material (blood).

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: The following personal protective equipment have been identified as being required for meeting elements of this job description: 1. Goggles 2. Gloves 3. Respiratory Face Mask 4. Lab Coat
