Job Description
The Director of Government Affairs and Policy will play a pivotal role in shaping and advancing the organization's policy agenda. This leader will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to influence public policy, build strong relationships with government officials, and advocate for the needs of mothers and families at the local, state, and national levels. The Government Affairs and Policy Director will lead the interaction with local, state, and federal legislative bodies and government agencies to represent and protect the Mothering Justice plans and interests.

Key Responsibilities:
* Policy Development and Advocacy: Lead the creation and execution of comprehensive policy strategies that align with Mothering Justice's mission and goals. Analyze legislation and regulatory changes to develop policy positions and advocacy plans.
* Government Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and other key stakeholders. Represent Mothering Justice in meetings, hearings, and public forums, ensuring that our interests and plans are effectively communicated and safeguarded.
* Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the executive team to set organizational priorities and develop strategic initiatives that advance our policy objectives. Provide guidance on policy issues and advocacy strategies.
* Public Affairs: Oversee communication strategies related to policy and government affairs. Prepare briefing materials, policy briefs, and position papers for internal and external audiences.
* Research and Analysis: Conduct research on relevant policy issues, track legislative developments, and evaluate the impact of proposed and enacted policies on the organization's target populations.
* Team Leadership: Manage and mentor a team of policy and government affairs professionals. Foster a collaborative environment and ensure that team members are equipped to meet their goals.
Education and Experience
* Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Political Science, Public Relations, or related field required; MPP, MBA, or law degree preferred.
* At least 7 years of experience in government affairs, public policy, or advocacy, with a proven track record of successful policy influence and government relations.
* Additional certifications or specialized training in areas such as legislative affairs, advocacy, or nonprofit management are preferred.
* Significant experience working directly with legislative bodies, such as having previously held roles as a legislative aide, policy advisor, or in a government relations position. This experience should include a proven track record of successfully influencing policy and managing legislative processes.
* Experience working within the nonprofit sector, particularly with organizations focused on social justice, family advocacy, or similar fields. Familiarity with nonprofit operations, fundraising, and stakeholder engagement is beneficial.
* Experience leading or contributing to successful policy campaigns or advocacy efforts, demonstrating an ability to develop and execute strategic plans that achieve measurable outcomes.
* Proficiency in using data and research to inform policy positions and strategies. Experience in data analysis, trend identification, and evidence-based decision-making is valuable.
* Proven ability to build and manage coalitions or partnerships with other organizations, advocacy groups, and community leaders to advance policy goals.
* Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic policy initiatives.
* Experience in handling policy-related crises or contentious issues, showcasing the ability to navigate complex political landscapes and respond effectively to emerging challenges.
* Strong background in developing and executing communication strategies, including public speaking, media relations, and crafting persuasive policy briefs and reports.
* Passion for social justice and a commitment to advancing the needs of mothers and families.
