POSITION SUMMARY

To provide internship candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of a position as it relates to job performance in the concrete construction services sub-contracting sector of the industry. The program is designed to extend over a continuous training period of, ideally, no less than 9 weeks. The program is designed to include two major components: field and office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Field Component

  1. Train in the types of work performed by WBC
  2. Train with technical knowledge and skills in footings, slabs, columns, walls, elevated shored slabs, formwork, setting anchor bolts, concrete placing and finishing, layout, etc.
  3. Experience and participate with an active role in Teamwork
  4. Train with Inspections (rebar, post tensioning, formwork, etc.)
  5. Report any job site and/or WBC employee related safety violations to appropriate supervisory personnel.
  6. Work as a safe and productive member of a construction crew/team

Field Responsibilities

Phase I: Building Laborer Category - responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Assist carpenters and carpenter helpers to build concrete forms
  2. Assist carpenters and carpenter helpers with assembling prefabricated (i.e., patented) forms
  3. Assist carpenter helpers with assembling scaffolding attached to concrete wall forms
  4. Hold lumber in place for carpenters to nail in form building and/or assembly processes
  5. Clean wooden, metal, or other concrete forms.
  6. Help stack and load shoring and braces from dismantled forms.
  7. Oil metal forms
  8. Convey materials and tools about the job site
  9. Dig shallow holes or trenches to support posts, braces, and other structural members of concrete forms using hand tools
  10. Perform hand excavation of some footings, pads, and turndowns in special situations where equipment cannot reach or be used. (i.e., remove water and mud/silt from footings)
  11. Assist carpenters and carpenter helpers to build concrete forms
  12. Prepared for work daily with all PPE: steel toe boots, safety vest, safety glasses, safety gloves – as well as all job specific tools from the job’s appropriate tool list.

Phase II: Carpenter Helper Category - responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Provides building materials to form carpenters (unless done by laborer)
  2. Uses hand, small power and power-actuated tools, as well as light power equipment, to measure and cut new/used lumber according to instructions from the form carpenter during the form building process
  3. Erects appropriate scaffolding using hand tools
  4. Assists carpenters with constructing and bracing concrete forms
  5. Place panels and form units in position preparatory to assembling
  6. Nails expansion joint material to walls or forms
  7. Edge or wall forms to achieve alignment
  8. Places and ties re-bar.
  9. Sets anchor bolts using string lines as per carpenter or foreman’s directions/settings
  10. Rubs and repairs concrete surfaces as directed by carpenter or foreman
  11. Removes shoring and braces from forms, dismantles, and stacks them for storing/transport
  12. Operates vibrator during foundation, column and wall pours
  13. Places and finishes concrete in some of these same concrete pours
  14. Mixes grout according to directions and grouts baseplates
  15. Helps to disassemble forms after the concrete has set-up
  16. Assists form carpenters with their duties as directed
  17. Always helps to keep work area clean
  18. Prepared for work daily with all PPE: steel toe boots, safety vest, safety glasses, safety gloves – as well as all job specific tools from the job’s appropriate tool list.

V. Office Component

This component will last approximately 1 to 5 days, and may cover, but is not limited to: Safety, Engineering, Accounting, Management, and a basic introduction to WBC Commonly Used Software: Viewpoint, Primavera Contractor, Microsoft Outlook, VPN, WBC Network Structure, and AutoCAD.

  1. Communicating with stakeholders (e.g., clients, suppliers, vendors, WBC personnel, etc.)
  2. Problem solving and decision-making
  3. Managing Subcontractor and Vendor Relationships

VI. Job Requirements (Field and Office Components):

  1. Follows all company and job site SAFETY rules.
  2. Successfully completes all company and job site safety, personal protective equipment, rigging, MSDS, OSHA regulations, and WBC Safety Manual orientations.
  3. Complies with all company, state, and OSHA safety rules, regulations, and guidelines.
  4. Reports any job site and/or WBC employee related safety violations to appropriate supervisory personnel.
  5. Works as a safe and productive member of a construction crew/team.
  6. Follows directions from Equipment Operator / Carpenter Helper / Carpenter / Lead Carpenter / Foreman / Superintendent.
  7. Participates in any skill training offered, as directed.
  8. Willing to submit to background check – required
  9. Perform all assigned roles, responsibilities, and related work processes/tasks in the safest possible manner. Ensure that a safe, accident/incident-free work environment is maintained for all co-workers, customers, clients, suppliers, etc. at all times.

Education and/or Experience

  1. College or University Rising Junior or above - Preferred
  2. Field construction experience - preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  1. Good attitude and character
  2. Willing to learn
  3. Willing to share knowledge
  4. Willing to stop unsafe work or at-risk behaviors

  7. Willing to work long hours as required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  1. Valid Driver’s License – preferred
  2. OSHA 10-Hour Certification – Required; training provided by WBC

Physical Demands

  1. Lifting and carrying up to 90 pounds
  2. Frequent lifting, bending, kneeling and reaching
  3. Walking frequently
  4. Reaching above shoulder
  5. Standing for long periods of time
  6. Climbing ladders, working at heights, wearing/using fall protection harness
  7. Handling and assembling formwork
  8. Handling and installing concrete reinforcement materials
  9. Handling, placing, and finishing of concrete
