Job Description

Desert Spine & Sports Physicians is a growing, multi-specialty medical practice, and we're looking for a Nursing Assistant to support our surgery center team one day per week.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on patient care, takes pride in helping others, and wants to be part of a collaborative clinical team. You'll play an important role in helping patients feel comfortable and prepared for their procedures, supporting the nursing team throughout the day, and keeping the surgery center organized and running smoothly.

Schedule

Every Thursday, from 6:00 am to 5:00 pm, with hours varying based on the provider schedule. Arrival may be as early as 5:30 am, and some days may run past 5:00 pm. Flexibility is required. Additional days may be available in a Medical Assistant capacity at our PM&R clinics.

What You'll Own

Patient Care & Experience

  • Prepare patients for surgery, including assisting with surgical gowns, providing emotional support, and helping patients feel comfortable throughout the process.
  • Assist with pre-operative intake, obtain and document vital signs, and ensure required consents are completed.
  • Assist with patient positioning, mobility, and transfers, including helping patients onto the operating table and into wheelchairs.
  • Monitor patient comfort and condition throughout the process and promptly communicate any changes or concerns to the nurse or surgeon.
  • Assist with hydration and IV line setup as directed by a nurse.
  • Support patients during recovery, including assisting with basic wound care and dressing changes as directed.
  • Help prepare patients for discharge, provide post-operative education and discharge packets, assist with dressing, and escort patients to their vehicles.

Surgical Team & Room Readiness

  • Help prepare operating rooms at the start of the day, as directed by the Director of Nursing, ensuring equipment, instruments, and supplies are available.
  • Assist with room turnover between procedures, including cleaning and disinfecting instruments, equipment, and patient care areas.
  • Maintain clean and organized pre-operative, operating room, and recovery areas.
  • Ensure the surgical team has the supplies and support needed to keep the daily schedule moving efficiently.

Documentation, Supplies & Safety

  • Maintain accurate patient documentation, including intake information, consents, and recovery progress.
  • Monitor and restock supplies and communicate shortages to the nursing team.
  • Assist with patient scheduling and appointment confirmations as needed.
  • Follow established infection control, safety, and regulatory procedures, including completing required pre-operative checklists.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and protect patient rights.

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role

We're looking for someone who is dependable, compassionate, and takes ownership of their work. Someone who can balance patient needs with the pace of a busy surgery center, communicate effectively with the clinical team, and recognize what needs to be done without waiting to be asked.

The ability to stay organized, adapt as priorities change, and consistently follow established patient care and safety procedures is important. Experience in an ambulatory surgery center is highly preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • CNA or Nursing Assistant certification preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Previous healthcare experience, preferably in an ambulatory surgery center or hospital.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, surgical instruments, and infection control practices.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, and clinical staff.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Physical & Work Environment

  • Ability to lift and assist with moving patients, with assistance when needed.
  • Ability to stand, bend, and move for extended periods.
  • Work involves exposure to medical equipment, surgical instruments, and occasional bodily fluids.
  • Must be comfortable working in an outpatient surgery center environment and following established safety and infection control protocols.
