Position Purpose: The Assistant Chief Engineer supports Plant Operations in overseeing the day-to-day operations of hospital and off-site facilities. This role provides direct supervision of maintenance staff, ensures safe and reliable operation of building systems, and supports compliance with regulatory, safety, and accreditation requirements. The Assistant Chief Engineer plays a key leadership role in daily operations, staff oversight, emergency response, and facility repairs across hospital and clinic locations. This position is limited to building repairs and operational support and does not include lease administration, rent billing, or tenant financial management.

  1. Essential Functions (listed in order of importance)
  2. Assist in supervising and coordinating daily plant engineering and maintenance operations to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable facility performance.
  3. Oversee building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, utilities, and related infrastructure.
  4. Directly supervise assigned maintenance and plant operations staff, including task assignment, performance monitoring, coaching, and training support.
  5. Serve as an on-site operational leader in the absence of the Manager of Plant Operations.
  6. Respond to operational issues, equipment failures, and facility emergencies, including participation in required on-call rotation.
  7. Assist in managing compliance with Joint Commission, CMS, Life Safety Code, Environment of Care, Emergency Management, and applicable local and state regulations.
  8. Participate in Environment of Care, Safety, and Emergency Management committees as assigned.
  9. Assist with inspections, audits, documentation, corrective actions, and deficiency tracking.
  10. Assist in planning and oversight of facility repairs, renovations, and minor construction projects.
  11. Coordinate and oversee outside contractors and vendors performing maintenance or repair work.
  12. Secure bids and estimates for repair and maintenance services as directed.
  13. Assist with development and monitoring of the Plant Operations budget, tracking expenses and identifying variances.
  14. Conduct site inspections of off-site and clinic facilities related to building repairs and maintenance only.
  15. Serve as the operational point of contact for facility repair needs at off-site locations.
Marginal Functions

  • Participate in staff meetings, in-services, emergency preparedness activities, and committees as assigned.
  • Perform related duties consistent with the scope of Plant Operations leadership.
Job Requirements

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in facilities maintenance, plant operations, or healthcare facilities management.
  • Must be a Local 399 Union member

Licenses / Certifications

  • Trade license required (electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, or equivalent).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Joint Commission Environment of Care standards.
  • Working knowledge of Life Safety Code and healthcare facility regulations.
  • Strong understanding of building systems, utilities, and maintenance operations.
  • Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Computer Skills

  • Working knowledge of standard office software and maintenance management systems.
Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk hospital and clinic facilities for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to work in mechanical rooms and construction environments.
Mental and Emotional Requirements

  • Ability to cope with a high level of stress.
  • Ability to make decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and respond to emergencies.
Working Conditions

  • Monday through Friday business hours with required on-call rotation.
  • Exposure to mechanical rooms, construction areas, noise, heat, cold, and emergency conditions.
Reporting Relationships

  • Positions reporting to this role: Maintenance and Plant Operations staff as assigned.
