As a Traffic Signal Technician, you will help install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair the City’s traffic signal infrastructure that keeps motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency responders moving safely throughout Chesapeake. The Traffic Operations team maintains more than 200 traffic signals, emergency signal systems at Fire Stations, emergency vehicle preemption systems, and school zone flashers across the City. VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education in electronics or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license with a driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Must obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) learner’s permit within three (3) months of hire and a CDL Class B license within six (6) months of hire. Fall Protection certification must be obtained within one (1) year of hire. International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician certification is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

In accordance with City policy, this position is deemed safety-sensitive. As such, applicants for this position are subject to pre-employment drug/alcohol testing after receiving a conditional offer of employment and may also be subject to random testing. This drug test includes testing for marijuana. Possession of a medical marijuana card will not excuse an applicant from the testing process; however, a test will not be considered positive for marijuana if a valid medical marijuana certification is presented unless the position requires a commercial driver’s license (CDL) or is a sworn law-enforcement officer/deputy.
