The Express is a vibrant grab-and-go cafeteria with an event space, offering an eclectic array of globally inspired dishes with a focus on quality ingredients and innovative culinary techniques. It primarily serves the tenants of the Varnum building as a quick stop for all their food and beverage needs.

We are seeking a skilled and customer-oriented Barista to join our small, collaborative team where everyone pitches in to support one another. As a Barista, your primary role will involve crafting high-quality beverages and providing excellent customer service, while also contributing to food prep, salad bar setup, and custodial tasks like mopping. The ideal candidate is passionate about coffee, possesses strong communication skills, and thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. Building a strong regular customer base is key, and remembering names and details of customers' lives is an important part of creating a welcoming experience.

Responsibilities:

• Prepare and serve a variety of hot and cold beverages, including espresso drinks, teas, and smoothies, according to established recipes and quality standards.
• Greet customers warmly, provide friendly, efficient service, and build relationships by remembering names and personal details to foster a loyal customer base.
• Stay informed about our beverage and food offerings.
• Operate espresso machines, coffee grinders, and other equipment with precision and care.
• Maintain a clean and organized workspace and adhere to sanitation and safety standards.
• Assist with food preparation, including setting up the salad bar and preparing pre-made food and beverage items during downtime.
• Perform custodial tasks, such as mopping and cleaning, to ensure a tidy and welcoming environment.
• Monitor inventory of coffee beans, milk, syrups, and other supplies to ensure efficient service.
• Handle cash and electronic payments accurately, process transactions efficiently, and maintain proper cash handling procedures.
• Collaborate closely with team members to foster a positive work environment, assist with various tasks as needed, and contribute to the overall success of the cafe.
• Stay updated on industry trends, new coffee products, and brewing techniques to continually improve skills and knowledge.

Requirements:

• Previous experience as a Barista or in a similar customer service role is preferred.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with customers and team members while building rapport with regulars.
• Strong teamwork mentality and willingness to assist with diverse tasks, including food prep and custodial duties.
• Attention to detail and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
• Basic math skills for cash handling.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 pounds.
• Availability to work regular morning hours.
