About This Position

Situated within the shared, unceded territory of the L̓il̓wat7úl (Líl̓wat People) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish People), the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is a vibrant destination resort community, local government organization and leader in providing municipal programs, services, progressive planning, and infrastructure. The Utilities department has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Wastewater Chief Operator. Reporting to the Wastewater Supervisor, this position offers 76.5 hours bi-weekly starting immediately.

This supervisory technical work involves planning, organizing, and supervising the work of team members engaged in the inspection, service, operation, maintenance, and repair of applicable systems and equipment in accordance with Federal, Provincial, and municipal regulations and standards. This role schedules and coordinates the work to ensure efficient operation, is fully responsible for the quality and quantity of the work performed by team members and exercises considerable independence of judgement and action within defined limits. The Chief Operator works without close supervision, demonstrates considerable independence of judgment, and solves most field problems independently.

Qualified candidates have completed a grade 12 diploma, or equivalent, and technical training plus considerable related experience, preferably in a supervisory capacity. Required certifications for the role are EOCP Wastewater Collection Level 3 and EOCP Wastewater Treatment Level 4. Qualified candidates demonstrate considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, tools and equipment applicable to maintenance and repair work supervised; the ability to plan, lay out, assign and direct the work of a team and coordinate the work with trades and/or contractors; and the sound knowledge of the occupational hazards, proper safety precautions and environmental regulations applicable to the work. Qualified candidates also demonstrate skills in the use and care of tools and equipment; the ability to operate vehicles safely; good technology skills for navigating SCADA, GIS, records database systems, and Microsoft 365. Candidates must possess physical strength and coordination to permit performance of manual work outdoors in all weather.

The successful candidate is an excellent communicator with demonstrated leadership for training and developing staff and strong abilities to maintain records, prepare routine reports, order resources, and assist in budget planning. The successful candidate also demonstrates commitment to promoting a diverse and equitable workplace within their team and will create and maintain effective working relationships with others including the Public and Vendors, while contributing to a positive environment. As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid BC class 5 driver’s license and must provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract prior to beginning employment.

This position works 76.5 hours bi-weekly at a rate of $47.12 per hour. Employees in the Utilities department shall normally work a schedule consisting of 8 days of work in a fourteen-day period. Each day of work shall be 9.5 hours excluding a one-half (1/2) hour lunch period.
