About This Position
The Assistant City Administrator assists the Mayor in the overall management of the City. This position supports the Mayor and City Council to ensure smooth running internal and external operations of the City, represents the City to the public and other agencies, and initiates, evaluates, and implements the Mayor’s policies, programs, and procedures. This role is expected to apply an extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of governmental management, administration, and operations to navigate complex political and governmental administration issues. This individual may supervise other staff at the direction of the Mayor. This position is appointed by the Mayor.

- Carry out the policies and directives of the Mayor, city ordinances, and City Council to aid the efficient, effective, and equitable operation of City programs and services.
- Research and analyze a variety of organizational issues and projects of a complex and potentially sensitive nature. Advise Mayor and staff on best courses of action.
- Attend meetings of the City Council, and Boards and Commission meetings as directed by the Mayor. Represent the Executive position on issues and challenges that arise in these meetings.
- Review projects and reports from the departments and suggest alternatives as appropriate.
- Serve as executive liaison and advisor on finance, human resources management, labor relations, legal, and other administrative matters.
- Review Executive office budget, prepare summaries, and advise the Mayor on budget matters. In cooperation with the Mayor and Finance Director, provide analysis, alternatives, and recommendations for meeting the City's budget requirements and short- and long-term goals.
- Direct and perform various administrative and management tasks as directed by the Mayor.
- Administer the budget of the Executive department; review budget expenditures and maintain budget control on behalf of the Mayor.
- Assist the Mayor in the oversight of assigned Department Directors.
- Review and schedule items for the City Council agenda with the Mayor and Council President.
- Coordinate the preparation of materials for Council meetings as needed, confer with staff regarding administrative questions, confer with councilmembers regarding content, technical aspects, and appropriateness of agenda items.
- Assist in drafting ordinances in coordination with City Attorney and/or Department Directors.
- May accompany or represent the Mayor at committee meetings, City gatherings or other official functions.
- Draft replies to correspondence received by the Mayor; prepare formal proclamations, documents, and reports.
- Be available for evening and weekend meetings and work.
- Serve as administrator in responsible charge, when designated, in the absence of the Mayor.
Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Government, Public Relations, Communications, Political Science, or related field plus five (5) years demonstrated successful progressively-responsible experience in public sector management, preferably in municipal government, or an equivalent combination of related education and experience. Master's degree in Public Administration or closely related field preferred. Background check may be required.
