RETTEW is seeking a number of Geologist I or II candidates to support our Geotechnical and GeoEnvironmental teams based in Pittsburgh, PA. This role offers hands-on experience in both field and office environments, supporting investigations that help clients understand subsurface conditions and environmental factors that impact engineering design and site development. Work Environment
Workplace Designation: Hybrid
Location: Pittsburgh, PA
This role includes a mix of office and field work supporting geotechnical and environmental investigations. Fieldwork may require travel to project sites, outdoor work in varying weather conditions, lifting equipment, and overnight stays depending on project needs.
Safety & Compliance Requirements
This position is designated as safety-sensitive. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment screenings, including background checks, motor vehicle record review, and drug and alcohol testing where permitted by law. Employees in this role will operate company vehicles and perform field-based work. Ongoing compliance with RETTEW safety policies and procedures is required.
Position Summary / What You’ll Do
As a Geologist I or II, you will support Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental projects through field investigations, data collection, analysis, and reporting. Your work will help evaluate subsurface conditions, support regulatory compliance, and contribute to technical deliverables that guide engineering decisions by our clients. As your experience grows, responsibilities will expand to include more independent technical work, data interpretation, and project coordination. We provide a multitude of project diversity in the energy (oil & gas), utilities (power distribution), residential (development), commercial, industrial, and transportation sectors.
Responsibilities / Day-to-Day
- Conduct field investigations including soil and rock sampling and groundwater monitoring
- Assist with subsurface exploration programs and monitoring well installation activities
- Collect and maintain detailed field logs and documentation
- Coordinate laboratory testing and assist with data interpretation
- Prepare technical reports and documentation
- Support pipeline routing & construction, geohazard mitigation, and landslide remediation activities
- Provide construction inspection and/or landslide remediation inspection tied to new construction projects and on-going landslide remediation
- Assist with permits and regulatory compliance tasks
- Research applicable regulations
- Identify discrepancies in data and assist with technical problem-solving
- Communicate findings to project teams
- Follow safety and quality procedures
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology or related discipline
- 1 to 3 years of related experience
- Ability to perform fieldwork
- Strong communication skills
- Computer proficiency
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred
- GIT certification
- Master’s degree
- Geotechnical or environmental experience
- Soil and groundwater sampling experience
- Drilling inspection experience (preferably PADOT certified)
- Regulatory familiarity
- OSHA HAZWOPER training
