Position Summary

The Youth & Family Services Instructor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering educational and enrichment programs for youth participating in Thornton Township’s summer programming. This seasonal role requires prior teaching or instructional experience and focuses on creating structured, engaging learning environments that support academic enrichment, life skills development, and positive social interaction across age groups 5–6, 7–8, 9–10, and 11–13.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Plan and deliver structured, age-appropriate lessons and activities for assigned age groups (5–6, 7–8, 9–10, 11–13) Facilitate academic enrichment, STEM, arts, and life skills programming Maintain a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment Manage participant behavior and ensure program structure Supervise youth participants at all times, including during activities and transitions Track attendance and assist with program documentation Collaborate with staff to coordinate daily schedules and group rotations Support field trips, special events, and end-of-program activities

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in education, child development, or related field preferred Prior teaching, tutoring, or instructional experience requiredExperience working with youth in a structured setting strongly preferred Strong classroom management and lesson planning skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to adapt instruction based on age group and learning needs

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, and actively lead activities for extended periods Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. as needed

Working Conditions

Seasonal position running June through August Work is performed in classrooms, community centers, and outdoor environments May require weekday daytime hours with occasional extended program activities
