About the Position

The Small Engine Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining fractional-horsepower gasoline and diesel engines used to power construction equipment and other small machinery. This role includes troubleshooting mechanical issues using hand tools, identifying causes of equipment failure, and repairing or replacing defective components such as rings, bearings, carburetors, and ignition systems.

In addition to mechanical duties, this position provides yard support by maintaining an organized and clean yard area, assisting with loading and unloading materials and equipment, and monitoring equipment and material inventory entering and leaving the yard.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The starting pay is $30 per hour. More possible depending on experience and certifications.
  • Medical, vision, and dental insurance coverage is available on the first day of the month following 60 days of employment.
  • 401(k) match on eligible wages and is available for eligible employees on the first of the month following 60 days of employment. IMCO offers 100% contribution matching up to 4% of the employee’s eligible wages.

During the first year of employment: 10 days prorated on hire date

o January 1 prior to 6 months of employment: 10 days

o January 1 following 6 months of employment: 15 days

o January 1 following 5 years of employment: 20 days

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain small gasoline and diesel engines used in construction equipment and similar machinery.
  • Dismantle engines and inspect parts for wear, damage, or defects.
  • Repair or replace components such as rings, bearings, carburetors, magnetos, filters, and other mechanical parts.
  • Start and test repaired engines to ensure proper performance and operation.
  • Perform routine and scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, lubrication, and tune-ups.
  • Follow maintenance checklists to ensure all critical components are inspected, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake systems, fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other mechanical components.
  • Examine equipment to determine the extent of damage or malfunction.
  • Provide maintenance support, including troubleshooting, installation, repair, and servicing of equipment and component systems.
  • Review work orders and discuss repair plans with supervisors as needed.
  • Complete assigned work in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Perform all scheduled and unscheduled maintenance in accordance with applicable manuals and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, shop, and yard using appropriate tools such as air hoses, brooms, and sweepers.
  • Organize equipment and materials within the yard to ensure accessibility and safety.
  • Keep the yard clean by picking up litter, debris, and unused construction materials.
  • Assist drivers and other staff with loading and unloading equipment and materials in the yard.
  • Monitor and track equipment and materials moving in and out of the yard to help maintain accurate inventory awareness.
  • At times, run for parts, materials for jobs, and the shop.

Location and Commitments

  • Location – Ferndale, Washington
  • Travel to various construction project sites and/or company offices within reason
  • Full-time - 8–10-hour shifts
  • Evening/weekend work may be necessary to meet milestones.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of experience in general maintenance or tool repair preferred.
  • Familiarity with hand and power tools, mechanical systems, and basic electrical work.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks as needed.
  • Good communication and time management skills.
  • Able to obtain a DOT medical card.
  • This is a driving required position - Current and valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record capable of maintaining an insurable driving record.
  • CDL with med cert is Plus
  • Enrolment in a drug-free workplace program is required. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring THC in testing panels – including pre-employment drug screening.
  • A criminal background check is required; one must pass security clearance requirements for select projects.
  • Adhere to all safety requirements.
