We currently seek a temporary full-time Controller to support our Fiscal and Accounting function. Under the direction of the Vice President of Finance, the Controller facilitates the organization’s accounting and administrative functions. This is a temporary role while we search for our new CFO, and will allow the VP of Finance to focus on other areas during this time. The Controller supervises operations of accounts payable, investments and monthly close. Provides support for the agency’s administrative and purchasing. This position oversees two Accounts Payable staff as well as the Accounting Manager (with a team of two accountants under them). We are looking for someone with a strong accounting background, who knows their way around complex booking entries and audit processes. This position is hybrid based out of our Brooklyn Heights office (elevator building). This is a temporary six-month position that may be extended or concluded earlier than anticipated based on departmental needs.
Salary: $110,000 - $115,000 annually
Requirements:Essential Duties:
- Directs all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, account analysis.
- Supports the Vice President of Finance in formulating, recommending and implementing sound fiscal and administrative policies, procedures and controls.
- Provides schedules and documentation for the annual audit to the external auditors, and oversees audit as a whole.
- Oversee the preparation and organization of financial and tax data for Form 990, Form 990-T, and other filings, ensuring accuracy. Provides schedules and documentation to the tax accountants preparing annual tax filings.
- Manages accounts payable, ensuring entries are coded correctly, with clear descriptions, and booked to the proper periods.
- Advises regarding correct booking of entries and setup of Chart of Accounts, including intercompany transfers between entities.
- Supervises the Accounting Manager, who runs the monthly close process.
- Oversee all accounts and ledgers, ensuring financial reporting follows GAAP accrual standards, meets regulatory requirements, and is completed accurately and efficiently.
- Oversees bookings of depreciation and amortization.
- Develops and maintains a system for managing fixed assets and equipment.
- Provides supervision and training to fiscal staff.
- Works closely with the VP Finance to oversee the agency’s purchasing systems and office management functions.
- Oversees all financial recording into the accounting system and works closely with the Budget Analysts in our Grants Management division of Finance to ensure all revenue and expenses are recorded properly.
- Track restricted and unrestricted funds in accordance with grant and donor agreements.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required. CPA strongly preferred.
- 10-15 years of progressive related accounting experience
- 5 years minimum of nonprofit finance/accounting experience required; additional years preferred.
- 4+ years of experience managing a team.
Key Competencies:
- CPA strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of Chart of Accounts and proper coding/booking
- Experience in grant accounting with government funders preferred
- Experience leading a monthly close process
- Experience in Accounts Payable
- Prior Controller experience preferred
- Financial Edge experience a plus
- Experience with accounting involving multiple entities/companies and multiple buildings/owners a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Suite specifically Excel
- Independently carries out professional duties and achieving results defined in departmental work plans.
- Independent judgement in decision-making
- Initiative to advise on strategic changes regarding processes to increase efficiency
- Knowledge of GAAP and can advise on policies
