Position Type: The position is seasonal and employees are hired for a specific timeframe not to exceed six (6) months. They may work up to forty (40) hours per week throughout the designated season but are not to exceed 1000 hours during that period or 1508 hours in a year

Job Summary

The Lead Instructor, Swim position provides swim lessons to all levels, abilities, and class sizes, providing participants with a safe and fun learning experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 16 years of age or older.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications.
  • Strong swimming skills and knowledge.

The successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check, and subsequent mandatory background checks in accordance with current District policy requirements.

Preferred but not required:

  • Proficiency in the Spanish language.
  • Experience working with youth programming.
  • Experience in customer service.

Essential Functions

The following duties and responsibilities are intended to be representative of the work performed by the incumbent(s) in this position and are not all-inclusive.   • Plan and instruct swim and water safety programs in accordance with Basin’s curriculum, standards, and procedures.
  • Assist with advanced swim levels.
  • Ensure the progress, safety, comfort, and enjoyment for class participants.
  • Communicate with participants and parents concerning lessons, student progress, and related program information.
  • Participate in regular swim instructor in-service training.
  • Begin and end classes on time; remain after class to answer questions as needed.
  • Clean up supplies used during classes.
  • Maintain a high standard of customer service, presenting a professional appearance and attitude.
  • Enforce public health rules and regulations.
  • Maintain all pool storage presentation and cleanliness, including all outside organization facilities.
  • Inventory and monitor the condition of program equipment.
Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

Knowledge of:

  • Lifeguarding skills and the ability to demonstrate them.
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) program.
  • Lesson planning and class management principles.
  • Learning development, stroke techniques, water safety, program levels, teaching methods, practices, and progressions.

Skill and Ability to:

  • Demonstrate swimming skills as required for class content and teaching aids.
  • Work independently or collaborate with a team.
  • Work well with people of all ages, abilities, and class sizes.
  • Establish effective working relationships with staff and the public.
  • Be assertive with patrons in enforcing rules.

Working Conditions and Aptitudes

  • Duties are performed indoors or outdoors, which may involve working in all weather conditions and ongoing exposure to pool chemicals such as chlorine.
  • Physically conditioned to swim and move quickly when needed.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination; high degree of mental and visual alertness.
  • Ability to conduct extractions, deliver first aid or life support, and deliver or move equipment.
  • Work effectively with crowds and uncooperative individuals during difficult situations, emergencies, or periods of continuous demand.
  • Duties primarily performed in a public setting requiring constant interaction with a variety of people.
  • Work a variety of shifts including evenings, weekends, and/or holidays depending on department needs.
  • This position is ineligible for remote work. Essential duties cannot be completed without being physically present.

Physical Requirements

  • Equal or less than 25% | Focus on a computer screen.
  • Equal or less than 50% | Sitting.
  • Equal or less than 75% | Standing, walking, bending, and other physical exertion.
  • Equal or less than 75% | Pushing, pulling, and kneeling.
  • Equal or less than 100% | Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds unassisted.
