About This Position

The City of Eustis is seeking a trustworthy, responsible individual who, under direction, performs technical and administrative fire inspection work. As Fire Inspector, assists the Fire Captain in the day-to-day operational aspects of the Prevention Division in order to attain an efficient flow of work and to meet departmental demands. The employee has considerable responsibility for reviewing building and electrical plans and performing fire, commercial electrical, and construction inspections to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local Fire and Life Safety Codes.

Employee works in accordance with directives received from superior; however, is expected to exercise independence and initiative.

Examples of Machines, Tools and Equipment Used: City vehicle; general office and computer equipment; various maintenance and custodial tools; general inspection aid devices.


  • Oversees the day-to-day operation of the division by planning and organizing work in the Prevention Division;
  • Trains and instructs new personnel and conducts in-service training;
  • Conducts fire, commercial electrical, and construction inspections for compliance with required Federal, State, and local codes;
  • Performs annual inspections for fire code compliance on all buildings within the city;
  • Evaluates and interprets new and existing building codes;
  • Performs follow-up and enforces compliance;
  • Performs building and electrical plan reviews on all new construction and remodeling;
  • Performs fire investigations and reviews;
  • Completes and maintains all required records, reports, forms, etc.;
  • Assists in the development of departmental rules, policies, and regulations;
  • Performs public relations functions between the city and citizens, various civic agencies & other fire departments;
  • Approves occupational licenses for new businesses & temporary events;
  • Assists with the development of fire safety evacuation plans;
  • Performs research and conducts surveys for various reports;
  • Answers complaints and assists the general public;
  • Assists in preparation of departmental budget;
  • Attends training sessions and seminars;
  • Assists in all departmental activities in preparation for a major emergency, such as a hurricane or other storm or disaster; assists with aftermath activities of such disaster, including inspection, clean up, disaster relief, etc.
  • Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment;
  • Composes and writes detailed reports;
  • Monitors communications equipment and broadcasts messages when required;
  • Participates in custodial, maintenance, and repair duties;
  • Performs troubleshooting on various electrical problems throughout the City;
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Extensive knowledge of fire, electrical and construction inspection codes, laws, and ordinances; knowledge of the materials and methods used in general building construction, alteration and repair; knowledge of the building and electrical trades; knowledge of fire prevention; knowledge of first aid principles and procedures; knowledge of streets, roads and geography of city

Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications; significant ability to meet and work with contractors, developers & property owners to enforce compliance with various codes; ability to
interpret and follow departmental rules & regulations; ability to organize and compose detailed written and/or oral reports; ability to meet and work with the general public and other city employees; ability to make decisions in accordance with departmental policy; ability to drive and operate departmental equipment

Minimum Qualifications:
High school Diploma or recognized equivalent; Fire Inspector I Certification; at least three (3) years of fire inspection experience or the equivalent, or a combination of education, training, and experience. Fire Inspector II Certification preferred. Valid Florida Driver's License and an acceptable driving record are required.

Working hours:
Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Physical Demands - Continuous light work. Requires walking & standing; climbing, stooping, reaching, bending; good finger/hand dexterity & hand/eye coordination; good eyesight, hearing & speech; regular driving.

Salary Information:
$27.31 per hour; EXCELLENT benefits (Note: See Benefits Tab for more information). Applicants should expect a starting salary of $27.31 per hour. Only applicants with the most job-related qualifications will be selected for interview and further consideration. Additional consideration may be given to applicants with more extensive education, training, or experience. Following a thorough background investigation including a criminal history and driver’s license check, the candidate will be given a conditional offer of employment. The final candidate will be required to pass a drug test and medical exam.
