CNC Manufacturing Specialist – Multi-Axis Machining
Location: Newport News, VA
Job Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire
Pay Rate: Starting at $20.00+/hour based on experience

Position Summary

A growing manufacturing operation is seeking an experienced CNC machining professional to support precision production work involving both milling and turning operations. This role includes machine setup, program editing, troubleshooting, and hands-on machining within a fast-paced production environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with CNC equipment, interpreting technical drawings, and producing high-quality parts while maintaining efficiency and accuracy.

Primary Responsibilities
CNC Setup & Machining
  • Set up and operate CNC milling and turning equipment for production runs
  • Write, edit, and optimize G-code programs for 3-axis machining applications
  • Install tooling, establish offsets, and configure work coordinate systems
  • Perform machining operations including drilling, tapping, contouring, facing, turning, and cutting
  • Verify machine setup and part conformity through first-piece inspections
Blueprint Interpretation & Quality Control
  • Review job travelers, engineering drawings, GD&T specifications, and technical instructions
  • Inspect finished components using precision measurement equipment including micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, and indicators
  • Ensure components meet dimensional and quality standards
  • Support quality processes including First Article Inspection and PPAP activities
Troubleshooting & Process Support
  • Identify machining or tooling issues and make setup or programming adjustments as needed
  • Operate manual shop equipment including lathes, mills, saws, and drill presses
  • Assist with tooling management and preventative machine maintenance
  • Support production efficiency and process improvement initiatives
Production & Shop Support
  • Maintain organized work areas and safe operating practices
  • Track materials and support basic inventory activities
  • Meet production goals while maintaining workmanship standards
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 3 years of CNC machining experience
  • Ability to write and modify G-code programs
  • Strong understanding of machining geometry and trigonometry
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings
  • Familiarity with precision inspection tools and quality standards
  • Basic understanding of inventory and material tracking practices
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive physical tasks
  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills
Preferred Experience
  • Background in sheet metal fabrication or mixed manufacturing environments
  • Exposure to CAM software such as SolidWorks or similar systems
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality environments
  • Experience supporting process optimization or continuous improvement efforts
  • Hands-on experience with manual machining equipment
Equipment & Tools

This role may involve operation of:

  • CNC vertical machining centers comparable to Fadal VMC equipment
  • Manual mills and lathes
  • Precision inspection equipment including calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and depth gauges
