CNC Turret Punch Operator & Setup Specialist
Location: Newport News, VA
Job Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire
Shift: 1st or 3rd Shift Available (flexibility required based on production needs)
Payrate: Starting at $30.00+/hour depending on experience

Position Summary

A precision manufacturing operation is seeking an experienced CNC fabrication professional to support sheet metal production using turret punch equipment and automated fabrication systems. This position focuses on machine setup, tooling configuration, production support, and quality verification in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, experience working with sheet metal fabrication equipment, and the ability to independently manage setups while maintaining production quality and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
CNC Punch Press Setup & Operation
  • Prepare CNC punch press equipment for production runs by loading programs, staging materials, and configuring tooling
  • Set and verify punches, dies, and forming tools to ensure alignment, accuracy, and repeatability
  • Adjust setups and layouts to improve material utilization and production efficiency
  • Monitor machine performance and address issues related to tooling wear, feeding problems, or material inconsistencies
  • Operate fabrication equipment while maintaining throughput and quality expectations
Blueprint Reading & Inspection
  • Interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and manufacturing instructions
  • Perform in-process inspections using precision measuring equipment such as calipers and gauges
  • Verify completed parts meet dimensional and quality requirements
  • Maintain accurate production and quality documentation
Production Support & Coordination
  • Collaborate with engineering and production personnel to support schedules and manufacturing goals
  • Troubleshoot production issues and assist with process improvements
  • Work independently while prioritizing tasks and managing workflow efficiently
  • Follow all shop safety standards and maintain an organized work area
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience setting up and operating CNC turret punch equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings
  • Experience working with sheet metal materials including stainless steel, aluminum, and galvanized steel
  • Proficiency using precision measuring instruments such as calipers
  • Strong troubleshooting and mechanical problem-solving abilities
  • Solid math skills including geometry and trigonometry applications
  • Ability to organize work, estimate timelines, and prioritize tasks effectively
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform repetitive physical activities including standing, bending, and walking
  • Comfortable working in varying shop temperatures and production environments
  • Flexibility to work either 1st or 3rd shift depending on operational needs
Preferred Experience
  • Experience editing or modifying G-code programs
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM software systems
  • Forklift operating experience
  • Exposure to production scheduling or manufacturing coordination activities
Equipment Environment

This role may involve working with:

  • CNC turret punch presses with automatic tool changers
  • Combination punch/laser fabrication systems
  • Advanced sheet metal fabrication equipment with large tool-capacity systems
