What does a day in the life as a General Accounting Specialist look like?

  • Daily transaction journal (pulling deposits, assigning them to clients and buckets)
  • Complete reconciliation activities such as reconciling deposits to pledge activity, bank account reconciliation, and ensuring multiple data avenues remain in sync
  • Generating outgoing grants payments files and reviewing for correctness
  • Weekly/monthly journal entries for distributions (I.E. funds disbursed assigned to clients and campaign year)
  • Recipient change research and assignment (pulling reports, researching associated checks and check fees, identifying correct final NPO, and identifying donor vs FS/System redesignations to rack items closed without fees recouped in TDS
  • Completing weekly and monthly reporting, bank reconciliations, chargeback, ACH returns, NOCs, and resolving discrepancies between bank/product/third party reports
  • Monitoring client activity to ensure all dollars received are appropriated routed to the contractual charity, including identifying, researching and resolving discrepancies
  • Assistance with Nonprofit record management, to include researching program eligibility, researching current addresses, monitoring acceptable check cashing activity, obtaining critical documents, mapping records, etc.
  • Work customer support escalation tickets related to grants management activities
  • Communicating with account managers and clients regularly

What are the required qualifications for a General Accounting Specialist?

  • 1-2 years of experience in finance, accounting, or related fields
  • 1–2 years of experience working with US GAAP
  • Strong customer support and communication skills
  • Advanced working knowledge of Excel Data Analytics tools such as VLOOKUP, IF statements, pivot tables, creating graphs, charts, etc.
  • Process oriented with extreme attention to detail
  • Research data and use it to make a decision (I.E. use of Google, ChatGPT, IRS websites, GuideStar etc.)
  • Experience in financial driven processes such as accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, or record keeping.
