Job Summary
The Unapplied Cash Specialist is responsible for researching, analyzing, and resolving unapplied and unidentified cash payments.
This role ensures accurate application of customer payments, maintains clean accounts receivable balances, and supports timely financial reporting.
The specialist works closely with internal teams and external customers to resolve payment discrepancies efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Research and resolve unapplied, unidentified, and misapplied cash payments
- Apply customer payments accurately to open invoices in the accounting system
- Investigate payment discrepancies including short pays, overpayments, and deductions
- Communicate with customers regarding payment details and discrepancies
- Collaborate with Accounts Receivable, Billing, and Collections teams
- Maintain documentation of research and resolution activities
- Ensure unapplied cash balances are resolved within established timelines
- Assist with month-end close and account reconciliations
- Follow internal controls and accounting policies
- Identify process improvement opportunities
Qualifications
- Associate s or Bachelor s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (preferred)
- 2+ years of experience in accounts receivable or cash application
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
Technical Skills
- Experience with ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, or similar)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP)
- Familiarity with ACH, wire, lockbox, and remittance processing
Work Environment
- Office or hybrid work environment in a fast-paced finance department
