Relief Captain

Reports to: Captain

Category: non-exempt

Salary Range: (currently $28.00/hr)

Work Location: Portage


Summary:

The relief captain is expected to work two days a week. They are to provide excellent customer service while keeping safety the number one priority. They are required to navigate the M/V Ptarmigan across Portage Lake staying on schedule five trips per day. They are responsible for managing the crew and need to possess conflict resolution skills.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This position works under little supervision with daily decision making while following company policies, procedures, and guidelines. Needs to be able to problem solve quickly and make decisions confidently. This position will need to know how to react as well as take command in emergency situations. This role has supervisory duties.

Must possess 100 Ton Inland Masters License or greaterSafety of vessel, passengers and crew: The relief captain is responsible for everything that happens on their watch. They must respond to emergency situations. Keeping an up to date ship log is required, noting incidents or any other notable event of the day.Keeping on Schedule: In charge of keeping to the strict five sailings a day schedule. They must be confident enough to make weather calls in the event it isn’t safe to go out. If they get off track of the timing they must make up that time between trips to get back on track.Managing Crew: While on duty, relief captain must ensure the crew are working at the expected standard. They are in charge of making sure there is a positive work environment. Each crew member should feel safe, comfortable, and understand the job expected of them.Tracking Passenger Counts: During boarding, an accurate passenger count must be kept. This needs to be done with care and attention according to USCG regulations. Never are there to be more than 142 passengers allowed to sail on the vessel. Strict adherence to vessel capacity is essential.Staying in Contact with Office via radio: During each sailing, passenger counts need to be relayed and confirmed by office prior to untying from the dock. Office must be informed when vessel is untied and departed from dock. Inform office of any issues that may impact the decision to sail before more tickets are sold for the trip.Engine room start up and shut down: All necessary checks for the day are to be done and signed off on each day, confirming that all equipment is running properly and safely. Must be attuned to detail and use common sense as well as acquired knowledge specific to the machinery onboard the M/V Ptarmigan.Deckhand duties such as handling mooring lines during docking and un-docking procedures, taking and securing the gangway, ensuring its safety for guests and crew to use and assist them while using the gangway.Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

High school completion or equivalentMinimum age of 21 requiredMust be eligible to work in the United StatesManagement skillsMust be comfortable performing credit card transactions for onboard ticket salesAbility to work independently with supervision while achieving daily goalsMust be able to lift up to 40 poundsAbility to stand/walk/work on feet for a minimum of 8 hours per dayRequired to drive an hour along the Seward Hwy to and from work if residing in AnchorageMust be comfortable working outside all day long in the elements; sun, rain or windNeed to be mobile and limber enough to crawl through tight voids, go up and down ladders, walk over uneven surfaceNeed to be available two days a week for 10 hours a day. Extra overtime may be required either prior to regular start time or after, for regulatory maintenance and fuelingSuccessful completion of criminal background check. Ability to support and comply with company policies, procedures and guidelines.Must have valid drivers license.
