About This Position
Position Purpose: Provides operational oversight of the nursing team providing safe and efficient care in the following areas: PACU, Pre-Op/ASU, PAT & GI. Coordinates and communicates with the OR Nursing Supervisor and Anesthesia to ensure efficient patient throughput in all of Surgical Services. Develop and maintain physician relationships while monitoring performance and activities of nurses, technicians and support staff. Ensures unit compliance with all regulatory requirements. Conducts staff training and education to ensure staff competency and yearly training requirements are met. Performs rounds on patients to ensure excellent patient care is being delivered and performs service recovery as needed. CPAN, CAPA or SGNA certification preferred.
Essential Functions (list in order of importance including measures)
- Works as Permanent Charge Nurse, implementing the plan of care within the concepts of the Licensed Registered Nurse curriculum, with consideration for safety in practice, according to established prioritization of needs; documenting and communicating nursing interventions and responses of patient(s) to care.
- Evaluates patient(s) responses to nursing care rendered; documents and communicates evaluation data to appropriate health care team members; contributes to the modification of the nursing plan of care based on ongoing evaluation.
- Coordinates orientation of new staff to ensure clinical competence. Assist with orientation of float and agency personnel.
- Assists in holding staff accountable for hospital, nursing and unit policies and procedures, competencies and process improvement initiatives.
- Assists in the education and preparation of nursing staff for accreditation visits (IDPH & TJC).
- Coordinates unit-based staffing assignments on a shift-by-shift basis to achieve high quality and cost-effective care.
- Responsible for (2) administrative/education days and (2) patient care days per week. Must be assigned to patient care (2) days a week as part of the scheduled work week.

- Assumes responsibility for knowing and maintaining established hospital and departmental objectives and policies/procedures, including general sanitation, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Participates in performance activities including problem identification, data collection, solution selection, implementation and evaluation. Also, assists in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies as appropriate.
- Participates in staff meetings and other services, meetings or committees as required.
General Job Requirements :
- Registered Nurse with at least 1 year of experience in perianesthesia or critical care nursing
- Excellent communication skills, including negotiation skills, must be persistent and persuasive.
- Must be able to establish rapport and effective working relationships with physicians and staff.
- Must be able to prioritize multiple responsibilities and manage a large workload within tight deadlines.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and self-motivation.
- Ability to independently plan, organize, prioritize, schedule, coordinate, and make decisions relating to assigned tasks.
- Very strong customer service orientation, positive attitude, highly self-motivated, directed and change oriented.

Machines, tools, equipment and work aids are required: general office equipment; Other Equipment Includes: IVs, IV pumps, feeding pumps, PCA, Epidurals and other various nursing equipment.
