DEPARTMENT: Production
REPORT TO: Production Supervisor
JOB SUMMARY:
The Crane Operator is responsible for operating various types of cranes to lift, move, position, and transport heavy materials, machinery, or equipment on construction sites, manufacturing plants, shipping yards, or other industrial settings. Your role will involve ensuring the safe and efficient operation of electric, diesel, and gasoline cranes while adhering to all safety protocols and regulations.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Required to safely operate different types of cranes including mobile, tower, overhead, or hydraulic cranes according to job requirements.
- Lift, position, lower heavy materials/equipment using proper rigging techniques & equipment.
- Strictly adhere to safety guidelines, procedures, and regulations to prevent accidents or injuries during crane operations.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance on cranes to ensure optimal functionality. Report any malfunctions or issues promptly.
- Maintain clear and effective communication with ground crew, signalers, and other workers to ensure safe and efficient operations.
- Assess and prepare the work area before crane operation, ensuring stability and adequate space for maneuvering.
- Maintain accurate records of daily activities, including lifts performed, equipment inspections, and maintenance logs.
- Troubleshoot operational issues and make adjustments as needed to ensure smooth crane functionality.
- Collaborate with other construction or site personnel to coordinate crane movements and tasks effectively.
- Respond promptly/effectively in emergency situations, preventing accidents and mitigate risks.
- Wears PPE appropriate for the work assignment.
- Other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED is required; additional applicable training or certifications are preferred.
- 3+ years of experience operating cranes in a construction environment.
- Crane Operator Certification (NCCCO) or equivalent is required.
- Knowledge of crane operation procedures, load calculations, and rigging techniques.
- Strong understanding of safety standards and practices related to crane operation.
- Ability to read and interpret load charts, blueprints, and rigging plans.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow instructions & coordinate with team members.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to different job sites as needed.
- OSHA certification or additional safety training helpful.
- Experience with various crane types (e.g., rough terrain, lattice boom, all-terrain) desired.
- Knowledge of crane maintenance and troubleshooting necessary.
EQUIPMENT LISTING (MACHINES, TOOLS & SOFTWARE):
Advanced computer skills that include purchasing software, as well as the ability to send/receive e-mail and work with other purchasing software. Must be able to read, create and change blueprints and drawings.
Must be able to operate Computer, Email, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word. May be required to operate Printer, Copier, Fax Machine, Telephone, Scanner, and calculator, micrometers and gages.
MENTAL AND VISUAL DEMAND:
Moderate mental and visual attention to coordinate materials for manual work, machine operations, setups, inspections, and adjustments that require frequent decisions to detect and adjust for variance from proper operation.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises various employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and
disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND DEMANDS:
Moderate Lifting: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 100 pounds on rare occasions, with assistance.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Production Environment – While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to work near moving mechanical parts;extreme heat (non-weather);risk of radiation and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. During hot weather, work processes can produce condensation on the floor resulting in slippery conditions. Employees are required to wear steel toed, slip resistant shoes while working in production areas.
Safety Equipment - May wear a variety of PPE in production areas including safety glasses with side shields, safety shoes and other PPE in accordance with assigned work tasks.
