Job Overview:

The Specimen Processor plays a vital role in supporting the laboratory's diagnostic services by performing accurate and timely receipt, preparation, and processing of clinical specimens, including general lab and microbiology. This position ensures the integrity of specimens and supports laboratory technologists in efficient workflow and infection control practices. Additional tasks can be assigned at the discretion of the Supervisor, Manager, Director,

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Phlebotomy, or a related field
  • 1 or 2 years' experience in a clinical laboratory or specimen processing environment preferred

Scheduling Requirements:

  • Evening Shift
  • Part-Time
  • Weekends and Holiday coverage on a rotating schedule required

Essential Functions:

  • Receive and accurately accession all types of specimens into the Laboratory Information System LIS
  • Adheres to all policies regarding the safe handling of specimens; follows prescribed methods for needle and syringe control, and maintains and cleans accessioning and procurement dispatch area and equipment, such as countertops, centrifuges, refrigerators, etc
  • Verify specimen identification and integrity, promptly flagging discrepancies to appropriate staff
  • Answers telephone in a timely manner, giving information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guidelines
  • Centrifuges, pipettes off supernatant and splits specimens for multiple section and test analysis, setting up work sheets for some large volume analyzers; collects blood or nonblood specimens from nursing units and transports Pathology Department
  • Label, aliquot, centrifuge, and prepare specimens for routine and microbiology testing per protocols
  • Inoculate culture media and perform basic microbiology plating and prep tasks under supervision
  • Maintain chain-of-custody and accurate documentation for all specimen handling
  • Ensure timely delivery of specimens to the appropriate department or testing area
  • Assist with inventory control and reagent/media prep for general and microbiology labs
  • Uphold safety and biosafety protocols including PPE use, surface disinfection, and cabinet handling
  • Completes mandatory education in a timely manner
  • Participates in on-going education such as in service, continuing education, etc
  • Reviews on a periodic basis all policy, procedure and instrument manuals in order to ensure compliance and maintain current knowledge of procedures
  • Stocks shelves with phlebotomy supplies, issues 24-hour urine containers with or without preservative, and maintains, cleans accessioning, procurement dispatch area/equipment such as centrifuge, refrigerators
  • Have a solid grasp of processes and procedures for safely in preparing specimens for transport and storing laboratory samples
