About This Position
Job Description:
Assist with reclaiming clay and glaze, making bricks from reclaimed materials, and planning workable systems for reclaiming materials. The reclaim assistants will help prepare materials for storage or reuse throughout the semester and may help to identify materials and their use through basic testing.
Assistants will often communicate with peers and faculty/staff to help determine reclaimed materials and needs. They may need to move materials and bags of clay/buckets of glaze between locations in Stern and other locations on campus for community use (ie, bricks to the garden).
Present demonstrations and discussions for informational sessions in the ceramics department.
Assist with the preparation of the studio space for the semester.
Qualifications/Skills Needed:
Clay formulation and testing skills, forming with clay and making molds, and kiln firing knowledge.
Good communication skills.
Ability to follow directions, sometimes working without direct supervision.
An assistant must be organized, punctual, and dependable.
Willing to perform physical labor with the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Knowledge of kiln firing and departmental kiln protocols.
