About This Position

The purpose of this position is to maintain and repair the City’s emergency alarm system and to inspect the installation and maintenance of alarms connected to the City alarm system. The work is performed under the direction of the Superintendent of Alarms.


The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Maintains and repairs the City’s emergency alarm system; ensures operations and compliance with City building codes and standards, and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) fire codes.
  • Must be available for after hour’s on-call on a regular weekly rotational basis.
  • Reviews blueprints for compliance with electrical and fire codes.
  • Voluntary participation in the Aerial Support team.
  • Corresponds verbally and in writing with the Fire Marshal’s Office, Building Division, Central Communications, Health Department, and any other applicable City offices or departments.
  • Inspects fire system, sprinkler systems and other alarm components after maintenance, installations, orfires, and other emergencies.
  • Schedules, oversees, and assists, if needed, when contractors install, inspect, or repair alarms connected to the City alarm related systems.
  • May operate Aerial truck when required for inspections, repairs and other maintenance.
  • Maintains and updates database of City alarm and radio boxes. Diagnosis and repair Central Communication alarm consoles.
  • Maintains files, records and databases. Maintains daily operations log utilizing department’s records management system.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned or required.


High school diploma or equivalent with two years of installation, maintenance and repair experience in the alarm systems field or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a valid Connecticut driver’s license.

  • Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data, statutes and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.
  • Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as co-workers and the public, on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference, descriptive and/or advisory data and information such as blueprints, codes, ordinances, schematics, cut sheets, installation and maintenance guides, manuals, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.
  • Requires the ability to communicate orally and in writing with the Superintendent and all department personnel, other City departments, the Mayor, City Superintendent, residents, contractors and the public.

Mathematical Ability
  • Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals; may require the ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.


Physical Requirements
  • Requires the ability to operate, calibrate, tune and synchronize, and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as a computer and other office machines, aerial truck, radio boxes, alarm panels, meters, testers, hand and power tools, and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in performing skilled movements such as rapid keyboard use.
  • Tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects and materials of moderate weight, twenty-five to fifty pounds.
  • Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.


Environmental Adaptability


  • Ability to work under potentially hazardous conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as temperature and noise extremes, strong odors, smoke, electrical currents or machinery may cause discomfort and poses a moderate risk of injury.
