About This Position
Position Summary:Under general supervision of the Meter Reader Supervisor, reads and records electric and water meter readings for commercial and residential accounts.Essential Functions
- Reads and records water and electric meters on handheld computer that initiate billings for utility customers.
- Ensures that meters are functioning properly and reports broken glass, lids and other meter defects.
- Cleans out flooded and buried meters, keeping meter lens debris free.
- Cleans shrubbery and dirt from meter boxes and checks for broken bands and meter seals.
- Installs and removes electric and water meters.
- Checks consistency of meter readings and reports unusual cases.
- Collects past due amounts and rechecks accounts following questionable bills.
- Works on call to perform after hour service reinstatement.
- Routinely responds after hours when not on call to emergency situations involving utility service
- Performs other related duties as assigned
- Knowledge of City geography and street locations.
- Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of the practices and materials utilized in the installation of electric and water utility systems.
- Skill in observing and monitoring water and electric meters to determine compliance with prescribed operating standards.
- Skill in basic arithmetic calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Skill in reading meters and recording numbers accurately.
- Skill in effective oral and written communications.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with associate personnel, other City employees and the general public.
- High School Diploma and one (1) year experience in public contact or outdoor work; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess State of Tennessee Drivers License.
