Position Summary:
The LLSS Department invitesapplications for an Assistant Professor position to become part of the AmericanIndian Education program. The candidate's research and teaching experience willreflect preparation in American Indian Education or related field, as well asfamiliarity with Indigenous language revitalization, Indigenouspedagogy, and Indigenous research methodologies.The successful candidate will have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. in AmericanIndian Education, or related fields before Fall 2026. The successful candidatewill have a reduced course load for two years, before assuming a full courseload at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including core content courses(e.g., History of American Indian Education, Teaching the Native AmericanChild, and Issues in American Indian Education), AIE curriculum area courses (e.g., Language and Education in SWIndigenous Communities, Education Across Cultures of the SW, and Science andNative American Education) and a preservice educator preparation course (i.e.,Foundations of American Indian Education).

  1. An earned doctorate in American Indian Education or related fields by August 2026.
  2. Scholarly evidence of expertise in American Indian Education or related field.


Preferred Qualifications:
  1. Demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
  2. At least three years of teaching experience and/or related experiences in PreK-12 public schools, BIE, and/or tribal controlled schools.
  3. Excellence or potential for excellence in scholarly research and publishing in American Indian Education, and/or related field.
  4. Robust and current formal academic preparation/advanced study in American Indian Education.
  5. Excellence or the potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in American Indian Education.
  6. Ability or the potential to advise and direct graduate work.
  7. Interest in and commitment to a community engaged approach to outreach and collaboration with communities and Indigenous Nations in the Southwest.
  8. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
