About This Position

The Nutrition & Meal Transport Coordinator helps support daily meal service for older adults at the Encinitas Community and Senior Center, where the program serves an average of 25-30 meals per day. This role involves driving to pick up catered meals, heating and cooling prepared food, and performing setup, service, and cleanup in a welcoming, team-oriented environment. The position works alongside staff and volunteers while ensuring safe and friendly food service for the community. Scheduled hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30am-1:00pm but may be adjusted to meet the needs of the center.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge of customer service principles; food handling; objectives of recreational activities; instructional techniques; basic mathematical and reading concepts; record keeping; English language; and laws and regulations in driving a vehicle. The ideal candidate will have skills in: providing customer service; reading; record keeping; performing multiple tasks simultaneously; driving a vehicle; communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, volunteers, supervisors and the general public sufficient to convey information and to receive work.

This is a part-time/temporary/reserve non-benefited position. Incumbents work less than 999 hours a year.
Essential Duties of the Recreation Coordinator: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  • Drive city vehicle to pick up catered meals
  • Prepare catered menu items using kitchen equipment
  • Operate commercial dishwasher or 3 compartment sink to wash dishes
  • Set up and clean before and after meal service and events
  • Record food and equipment temperatures per safety guidelines
  • Follow environmental health and safety protocols while maintaining clear communication with staff and volunteers
  • Maintain inventory

  • English language, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Laws and regulations in driving a vehicle.
  • Operations, services and activities of a nutrition program.
  • Modern and complex principles and practices of program development and implementation.
  • Equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive nutrition program.
  • Marketing theories, principles and practices and their application to a nutrition program.
  • Methods and techniques of public relations and customer service.
  • Food and beverage operations.
  • Principles of program budget preparation and control.
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

Skills (position requirements at entry):
  • Record keeping.
  • Selecting, supervising, directing, training, evaluating and coordinating the work of staff.
  • Coordinating and supervising nutrition program and services.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and software related to area of specialty.
  • Eliciting community and organizational support for the nutrition program.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Operating a vehicle and observing legal driving practices.
  • Ability to work with senior citizens and large groups of people.
  • Public speaking.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate multiple assignments, responsibilities and tasks.


  • Valid California Driver’s License
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, with frequent pushing, pulling, bending, and standing for extended periods in a fast-paced, work environment.
  • San Diego County Food Handler’s Card (or willingness to obtain; on-site testing available)
  • CPR/AED certification may be required (training available)
