Blue Mountain Energy, which operates the Deserado Mine, an underground coal mine near Rangely, Colorado, is accepting resumes for the Mine Engineer/Chief Surveyor position. Blue Mountain Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of Deseret Power. This position reports to the Chief Engineer.

The successful candidate’s primary responsibilities are to provide surveying and mapping services for underground and surface operations. Provide engineering services for underground and surface operations. Design winter runoff containment structures, ponds, SAC (Storm Analysis Control), using computer simulator program. Complete design and submit to Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety (CDRMS). Design and monitor construction projects of surface facilities. Complete and submit to CDRMS.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Establishes and maintains site stations in all working sections. Responsible for survey accuracy.
  • Responsible for updating and maintaining the underground control network.
  • Schedule and manage check surveys as needed.
  • Maintain and update mine maps; ventilation, workings, drill holes, surface disturbance maps, permit maps and electrical. Full responsibility for all aspects.
  • Performs calculation for all survey work, surface and underground, including note reduction, checking and computer input and plotting.
  • Provides survey control for new construction, roof, floor, and rib profiles.
  • Provide engineering design and drawings for underground and surface construction projects.
  • MSHA plan submittals as required, roof control, ventilation, ERP and other site-specific plans.
  • Computes tonnage mined from volumetrics on a monthly basis, which is used to verify scale tonnage. Also used for tonnage breakdown by lease and provides information to accounting for royalty payments.
  • Submits new and revised permit drawings as required for new construction, change in drainage control for surface structures, pond and ditch sizing and design or redesign and reports to engineer of change in projects.
  • Maintains mining projections.
  • Maintains map and drawing files.
  • End of month reporting includes measure-ups, true-ups and production maps.
  • Develops drawings for accident investigations and surveys the scene of accident.
  • Develop spreadsheet programs for graphing specific data, as required.
  • Prepares time studies of production crews to determine ways to increase production.

We seek a seasoned and accomplished professional with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Qualified applicants must have knowledge of surveying (GPS, Total Stations Traverses, Drone) and underground mining. Two years related professional engineering experience is preferred. FAA part 107 SUAS license or the ability to obtain. Proficient in MS Word, Excel, as well as AutoCAD and with survey equipment. Strong leadership qualities, adaptability, integrity, and resourcefulness. Complete knowledge of relevant government laws and regulations impacting the functional responsibilities of the occupation. Willingness to work as a team player and show initiative. Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization, including preparing and presenting presentations to personnel and management. Elevated computer software skills.

Physical Requirements: Ability to operate machines such as computers, fax, and photocopier. Ability to lift up to 100 pounds while moving surveying equipment. Ability to stand, walk and climb ladders up to 15 feet. Ability to use hand tools overhead and in awkward positions. Ability to communicate with dispatch personnel, federal agencies and training of personnel regarding computers. Good written communication skills required for memos, daily, weekly and monthly reports as well as composing written instructions regarding the monitoring system. Ability to be accurate in reporting and ability to work under pressure in meeting deadlines.
