Position Summary
- Under general supervision, performs analytical procedures designed to aid physicians in diagnosing disease and monitoring current patient status. Under general direction, provides generalized and specialized professional laboratory skills in caring for neonatal through geriatric patients in the Laboratory and Blood Bank. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.
Position Responsibilities
- Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
  - Performs, a variety of chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic tests and procedures requiring the exercise of independent judgement. Reports results accurately and efficiently while screening for abnormal results and instrumentation malfunctions.
  - Performs internal quality control on all tests and participates in external proficiency testing.
  - Obtains laboratory specimens from the patient by phlebotomy; safely handles potentially hazardous specimens and materials.
  - Maintains the quality of laboratory instruments, equipment, records, and procedures.
  - Handles evidence in legal blood alcohol and sexual assault cases according to legally required protocol. May be required to give depositions and/or testify at related trials.
  - Communicates with physicians, nurses, patients, the general public and outside organizations; informs the public and answers concerns on AIDS testing, well-patient testing, and blood donation.
  - Implements new test methodologies including recommendations for new instrument purchases.
  - Updates knowledge and skills necessary to keep abreast of medical advances pertinent to laboratory testing.
  - Identifies needed procedure modifications.
  - Orders and maintains inventory of supplies.
  - Performs related work as required.
Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
- Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
  - Bachelor’s degree from a college or university in Clinical laboratory Science or a related science discipline and successful completion of a Clinical Laboratory Science program. Board eligible graduates must pass their Board of Registry examination within one year of employment.
  - Registration or registry eligible as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with an approved national certification agency. If not registered, must become registered as a Medical Laboratory Scientist with an approved national certification agency within one year.

  - Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

  - Ability to interpret results in light of current patient status; recognizes and analyzes problems and comes to a logical and timely solution to ensure accurate patient reports.

  - Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for neonatal through geriatric patients.
  - Comprehensive working and theoretical knowledge of the following areas: chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, serology, special chemistry, microbiology, immunohematology and transfusion therapy, immunology, phlebotomy, and blood gas analysis.
  - Skilled in performing automated and manual test procedures.
  - Active listening skills, giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
