Position Summary
The Detail Buffer Technician is responsible for preparing, buffing, polishing, and finishing painted and metal surfaces to achieve a high-quality appearance on custom emergency vehicles. This position plays a critical role in ensuring each vehicle meets Life Line's quality standards by removing imperfections, restoring gloss, and preparing surfaces for final inspection and delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Buff, polish, and finish painted surfaces using power buffers, polishers, and hand tools.
- Remove scratches, swirl marks, dust nibs, orange peel, and other surface imperfections.
- Inspect painted surfaces for defects and determine the appropriate corrective action.
- Apply polishing compounds, waxes, and finishing products as required.
- Clean and prepare vehicle surfaces before and after buffing operations.
- Protect adjacent surfaces from damage during the buffing and polishing process.
- Maintain consistency in finish quality across all vehicles.
- Operate pneumatic and electric buffing and polishing equipment safely.
- Read and interpret work orders and production schedules.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Assist with other paint department duties as assigned.
Education and Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous automotive, industrial, or manufacturing buffing experience preferred.
- Experience using buffers, polishers, sanders, and detailing equipment is a plus.
- Ability to recognize paint defects and apply appropriate corrective techniques.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Reliable attendance and strong work ethic.
Preferred Experience
- Knowledge of buffing, polishing, and finishing techniques.
- Ability to safely operate power tools and finishing equipment.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
- Ability to identify quality concerns and correct them efficiently.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
- Frequent use of hands, wrists, and arms while operating buffing equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to work around noise, dust, paint fumes, and polishing compounds.
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Work Environment
- Manufacturing environment with exposure to paint, dust, noise, and moving equipment.
- Fast-paced production setting with frequent collaboration across departments.
- Overtime may be required to meet production schedules.
Success in This Role

Contingencies of Employment
- Successful completion of a background check, pre-employment drug screen and physical examination
- Successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check, if applicable to the position
