Description Overview

The Facilities & Utilities Engineer is responsible for supporting the site's infrastructure by ensuring reliable, compliant, efficient, and cost-effective operation of facility and utility systems. This includes PLC controls/networks, facility and utility improvements, and sustainability programs. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, this role provides technical leadership for facility controls engineering, utility reliability, infrastructure management, energy optimization, sustainability initiatives, and project execution.

The Facilities & Utilities Engineer serves as the site's technical expert for utility and infrastructure systems, partnering closely with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, Quality, and Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) teams to maximize system availability, regulatory compliance, energy efficiency, and operational performance.

Scope of the Role
  • Promote a proactive safety culture and support all site safety initiatives.
  • Ensure utility systems consistently support manufacturing requirements and product quality standards.
  • Partnering with the Controls Engineer, serve as the site's technical resource for facility and utility control systems including PLCs, SCADA systems, HMIs, building automation systems (BAS), instrumentation, and industrial communication networks.
  • Support critical utility systems including boilers and steam systems, HVAC and building environmental systems, chilled water and refrigeration systems, compressed air systems, electrical distribution and energy management systems, water treatment, and wastewater treatment systems
  • Lead troubleshooting and technical investigations involving facility and utility systems.
  • Partner with Maintenance and Reliability teams to establish preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and defect elimination activities related to utility and infrastructure failures.
  • Identify and implement automation and control system improvements that enhance utility system performance, reliability, energy efficiency, and operational effectiveness.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on facility and utility performance.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, SOPs, PM procedures, and technical documentation.
Experience Required

Education and Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of engineering experience supporting industrial automation systems including PLCs, SCADA platforms, HMIs, process instrumentation, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and industrial communication networks.
  • Experience within FDA-regulated pharmaceutical, food, infant formula, consumer healthcare, or GMP manufacturing environments preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical discipline preferred.
  • Experience utilizing CMMS systems and SAP PM preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to read and interpret control narratives, functional specifications, electrical schematics, loop diagrams, P&IDs, and control panel drawings.
  • Advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation capabilities.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional teams and drive organizational change.
  • Ability to support troubleshooting of instrumentation, sensors, networks, and control system-related failures affecting utility reliability and performance.
  • Strong communication, coaching, technical leadership, and training skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Work Schedule:

  • Salaried position.
  • Monday–Friday
  • Availability to support plant operations, emergencies, shutdowns, and critical maintenance activities.
  • Occasional off-shift and weekend support may be required.
