This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Backend Engineer based in India.

This is a high-impact technical leadership role focused on solving complex backend and platform challenges at significant scale. You’ll shape architecture across teams, lead large cross-functional initiatives, and establish engineering standards that improve speed, reliability, security, and maintainability. You’ll help modernize large-scale backend systems into modular, reusable architectures while avoiding unnecessary complexity and fragmentation. The role combines deep systems expertise with strong product judgment and the ability to influence without formal authority. You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Infrastructure, Security, Data, and Engineering leadership. You’ll also help drive the responsible adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows across engineering teams. • Lead the technical design and delivery of large, cross-cutting backend initiatives spanning multiple teams and product areas.
• Identify and remove systemic engineering bottlenecks across product and infrastructure groups.
• Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture, including the modernization of monolithic and legacy systems into reusable, appropriately independent components.
• Establish engineering standards covering APIs, contracts, compatibility, schema evolution, testing, security, performance, observability, operability, maintainability, and production readiness.
• Define shared patterns for dependency management, data ownership, event-driven systems, failure isolation, service maturity, and operational documentation.
• Guide the adoption of Go services, Kubernetes operating practices, and Rust where they provide meaningful benefits for systems, security, performance, or software supply-chain concerns.
• Participate in on-call and incident response, provide technical escalation during complex production issues, and turn lessons learned into lasting architectural and operational improvements.
• Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to shape platform roadmaps, priorities, and investment trade-offs.
• Mentor Senior and Intermediate engineers while promoting technical excellence through code reviews, documentation, reusable patterns, and technical debt reduction.
• Lead the adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows, establishing appropriate quality, security, privacy, and operational guardrails.

• Demonstrated technical leadership across multiple teams or a broad and complex product area.
• Deep experience designing and operating backend architectures for complex applications, platforms, services, APIs, or shared backend systems at scale.
• Proven experience modernizing monolithic or legacy backend systems in production using approaches such as bounded contexts, package encapsulation, ports and adapters, service extraction, event-driven boundaries, or equivalent modular architecture patterns.
• Strong ability to influence without formal authority by creating alignment through clear technical proposals, decision records, documentation, and communication.
• Excellent product judgment, with the ability to balance customer outcomes, delivery speed, technical health, reliability, and long-term platform investment.
• Experience mentoring engineers and raising technical standards through hands-on guidance, code review, documentation, and example.
• Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows, including evaluating their effectiveness and establishing responsible adoption practices.
• Strong systems thinking, technical judgment, problem-solving ability, and written communication skills.
• Experience with Go services and APIs at scale is highly valuable.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud-native operations, including deployment, scaling, observability, rollback, and production readiness.
• Experience with Rust, Ruby/Rails modernization, PostgreSQL scaling, data partitioning, queues, messaging, or distributed systems is advantageous.
• Experience working on security-sensitive products, software supply chains, SaaS platforms, self-managed environments, or air-gapped deployment models is a plus.
