LOCATION: Coporate Office, Lynchburg, VA

SUMMARY

Oversees all aspects of day-to-day HR functions including benefits, compensation, recruitment, onboarding, training, performance, employee relations, workers compensation, company policies, HR communications to successfully balance employee needs with business objectives that contribute to and support strategic initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Develops and implements HR solutions that drive overall business performance and employee engagement.
  • Key contributor in the review and implementation of benefits and wellness programs.
  • Develops recruiting and staffing strategies to attract and retain top talent in a highly competitive market.
  • Implements recruiting processes that will increase diversity hiring opportunities throughout job levels.
  • Collaborates with managers with a continuous improvement approach, sharing opportunities to better support the employee experience from onboarding to retirement.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state employment laws and required HR training and works closely with the Safety Manager to ensure all safety training requirements are met.
  • Promotes a learning culture and oversees training programs to support career pathing and professional development opportunities.
  • Conducts compensation studies to keep abreast of trends in competitive market pay and recommends adjustments, as needed.
  • Understands HRIS system and collaborates with HR team regarding functionality, enhancements, and technical challenges.
  • Provides objective, quality guidance, and oversight on employee relations matters.
  • Conducts timely and thorough employment investigations, ensuring proper resolution and concise documentation.
  • Guides managers through performance conversations, promoting a coaching and feedback approach.
  • Oversees the preparatory work for performance reviews and merit pay recommendations.
  • Partners with accounting in the development of the company personnel budget. Oversees the budget and position control throughout the year.
  • Maintains and regularly reviews the Employee Policies Handbook to ensure it is current; makes updates and communicates changes as needed.
  • Maintains knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Audits workplace for compliance with federal and state employment laws.
  • Actively involved in the delivery of HR people initiatives and projects. Contributes towards improvement of processes and practices to enhance productivity.
  • Develops employee communications and responds to HR requests or support needs in a timely manner.
  • Develops and nurtures partnerships throughout the organization to build strong relationships between management and employees.
  • Ensure reporting compliance with state and federal employment regulatory agencies.
  • Represents the Company in a professional, respectful, trusting, and engaging manner.
  • Occasional overnight travel to branch facilities or for training as needed.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervises the human resources team. Required to carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; reviewing performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field; Master’s degree preferred. Minimum of 8 to 10 years of progressive experience in HR exempt-level roles, including HR leadership experience, 3+ years supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Recent experience with oversight in compensation, benefits, recruitment, onboarding, training, employee relations, and a solid understanding of federal and state employment laws is a strong plus.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Professional Human Resources Certification preferred (i.e. SPHR, PHR, SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP).

  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams) and related HRIS software. UKG (UltiPro) software experience a strong plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work involves standing and walking for brief periods of time, but most duties are performed from a seated position. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus. There is potential for eye strain from reading detailed materials and looking at a computer screen. Work normally requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate computer keyboards at a moderate skill level. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. Occasionally required to lift or move up to 10 pounds.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Required to travel between company locations, attend conferences, or meet with stakeholders at different work sites. Overnight travel may be required. A valid government driver’s license and an acceptable driving record, as determined by company standards and insurer requirements, are required. All vehicles operated for Company purposes must be legally registered with appropriate government authorities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Office based environment with regular interactions across departments. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
