Description:

POSITION SUMMARY

Fabricators operate various machines and hand tools in the fabrication department that cut, shape or grind sheet metal such as shears, brake press, hand grinders, insert press or punch or drill press. Fabricators use various hand tools to assemble components according to print and specifications. Higher skill levels operate CNC equipment, program, edit programs, and adjust machine controls and set-up work.

Essential Functions Statement(s)

  • Read work orders on the Job Traveler & follows verbal instructions to determine work instructions & inspection requirements, including materials to be used, dimensions and tolerances. Records time and job information according to company procedures.
  • Read work orders on the Job Traveler & follows verbal instructions to perform basic assembly operations on components or sub-assemblies.
  • Operates various machines in secondary operations including insert press, punch press, straight liners, and hand grinders. Follows safety procedures and work instructions.
  • Monitors own work and records job/production data as instructed. Performs work in accordance with quality & safety expectations.
  • Position, lift, align, and secure work pieces against fixtures or stops on machine beds or on dies.
  • Removes burrs and sharp edges, using portable grinders and Debur hand tools.
  • Measure completed work pieces to verify conformance to specifications, using micrometers, gauges, calipers, templates, or rulers.
  • Examine completed work pieces for defects such as chipped edges and marred surfaces, and sort defective pieces according to types of flaws.
  • Independently handle, lift, move new raw materials, tools, and fixtures in accordance with the physical requirements as stated in this job description.
  • Keeps work area & equipment clean. Follows department procedures for care of equipment.
  • Attends work consistently and is punctual, meeting Company's attendance policy.
  • Level 1 - Entry Level, Operate Only. Performs or operates machine to produce required quantities of parts within specified tolerance limits. Monitors machine performance or works using hand tools. Monitors part quality continuously, reporting problems to Supervisor. Employee works under general supervision. Possess the ability to perform the job tasks to meet expectations on hire, or within the 1st year of employment.
  • Level 2 - Set Up and Operate, established repeat parts. Possess the skills of a Level 1 operator and in addition can set up and operate a variety of machines including CNC Machines, to produce a higher difficulty of part than what would be expected of an entry level worker. Can verify alignment using measurement instruments and can consistently produce repeat parts accurately. Generally requires trade school (or equivalent work experience) combined with some previous on-the-job experience.
  • Level 3 - Set Up and Operate new first run parts. Possess the skills of a Level 1 & 2 however are able to set-up to run first time new parts of a higher complexity level. With respect to CNC equipment, has the ability to enter control panel settings and/or program. Has the ability to work with minimal supervision. Possess problem solving skills and can assist with training new personnel. Generally requires trade school (or equivalent work experience) and significant work experience in fabrication.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Education: High School graduate or GED required for entry level. Generally post-secondary education in Fabrication or Machining or equivalent work experience in the trades would be required for advanced skill positions.

Experience: Prior experience is not required for entry level; however individual would need to display an aptitude to learn the required skills for the position. Related experience and/or post-secondary education in the trades are required for advanced skill level ranking.

Computer Skills

Possess basic computer skills to interface with the Company's computer programs for recording time worked and job operations.
