This role plays a key part in ensuring patients receive timely, accurate, and seamless access to healthcare services through effective referral and authorization management. You will oversee frontline teams responsible for coordinating referrals, insurance verification, and prior authorizations, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies. The position focuses on improving patient access, reducing payment denials, and enhancing the overall care experience through efficient workflows and strong operational standards. You will lead and support staff across multiple locations while collaborating closely with clinical departments, access centers, and revenue cycle teams. This is a highly collaborative leadership role with 24/7 oversight responsibilities and a strong focus on service quality and process improvement. It is well-suited for a hands-on leader who thrives in healthcare operations and patient-centered environments.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will supervise referral management operations to ensure accurate, efficient, and compliant processing of patient referrals and authorizations while driving high-quality service delivery across multiple teams and locations.

  • Supervise and support referral management staff responsible for patient access, referrals, insurance verification, and authorization workflows
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance in referral and authorization processes according to regulatory standards and organizational policies
  • Oversee workflow design and process improvements aimed at reducing denials and improving patient access to care
  • Monitor performance metrics and implement strategies to maintain high service quality and operational efficiency
  • Provide training, coaching, and development for frontline staff and support leadership across multiple care settings
  • Collaborate with Patient Access, clinics, hospitals, behavioral health, and care management teams to ensure coordination of services
  • Manage multi-site team operations with 24/7 accountability across referral and access functions
  • Resolve operational issues and ensure timely completion of referrals and authorizations
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance patient experience and revenue cycle performance
  • Partner with leadership to align workflows, resources, and priorities across the health system
Requirements:

This role requires experience in healthcare access, referral management, or revenue cycle operations, along with demonstrated leadership capabilities in a fast-paced clinical environment.

  • Associate degree preferred or equivalent leadership experience in lieu of degree
  • 2+ years of experience in access services, pre-service, referral management, or revenue cycle operations
  • Prior experience in a supervisory or lead role strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of insurance verification, referrals, and authorization processes
  • Experience working in healthcare systems with multi-site or cross-functional coordination
  • Ability to manage teams in a high-volume, service-driven environment
  • Strong leadership, coaching, and staff development skills
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities across clinical and administrative teams
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to work within regulatory and compliance-driven frameworks
  • Flexibility to support 24/7 operational oversight as needed
