Job Description

Three Notch’d Brewing is seeking a Head Brewer! The ideal candidate has a deep passion for craft beer coupled with a strong desire to foster a positive and engaging work culture. Through hard work and a “lead by example” mentality the Head Brewer will be tasked with leading the entire brew team by not only creating world class liquid, but also teaching, motivating and developing the Brewery team. This position requires a candidate with an insatiable curiosity for beer, an appreciation for details and efficiency, a high standard of excellence, a can-do attitude, strong organizational skills and proven leadership.

Job Title: Head Brewer – Charlottesville

Direct Report: Founding Brewmaster

Job Summary: The Head Brewer will be based out of our main production facility at Ix Art Park in Charlottesville managing the day-to-day operations. The Head Brewer will work directly with the Founding Brewmaster and Production Manager to effectively execute operations of the production brewhouse. As the Head Brewer this individual will directly manage all Shift Brewers to lead a team to ensure all brews meet company standards with a focus on superior quality.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:

· Help recruit and train all production shift brewers.

· Foster a positive work environment rooted in hard work, educational opportunities, and collaborative brewing.

· Collaborate with the Production Manager in scheduling shift brewers within stated budgets and based on production targets for the brewing schedule at all 3NB production locations

· Observe brewers, evaluate job activities and work with Founding Brewmaster on performance management and coaching.

· Assign shift brewers daily, weekly and monthly cleaning schedules to maintain a clean working environment.

· Take on brew shifts as needed by the Production Manager.

· Manage Pilot Brewhouse as needed.

· Help on Packaging Line as needed.

· Participate in a weekly meeting with the Founding Brewmaster to review production, inventory, and recipe needs.

· Keep accurate inventory and quality management of raw materials and chemicals. Reconcile inventory no less than monthly.

· Enhance, and/or develop and enforce the policies and procedures of the organization, including creating and documenting comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for:

o Brewing and cellar operations including malt handling, wort production, fermentation, yeast handling, liquid transfer, fining, colloidal stabilization, filtration, carbonation, keg cleaning/coding/filing.

o Equipment operations, including cleaning and sanitization procedures.

o Safety protocols.

o Production Recordkeeping

o Hazardous material handling

· Manage and supervise brewing staff:

o Lead brew-team meetings communicating current objectives, production performance to plan, challenges and successes, troubleshooting, and taking corrective action when necessary.

o Oversee and develop the brewhouse staff through technical, supervisory, and line assignments in all functions supported by standard job descriptions, performance objectives, and performance assessments.

§ Define these team requirements and performance objectives in conjunction with the Founding Brewmaster and Production Manager.

§ Conduct regular performance evaluations for brewhouse staff.

· § Development and utilization of comprehensive brewhouse staff training materials and programs.

§ Make sure all shift brewers are following SOPs to achieve consistent brewhouse efficiency.

· Put away, organize, and receive in Ekos all raw materials promptly upon arrival.

· Responsible for keeping the mill room, hop shelves and flavoring shelves clean, tidy and organized.

· Manage farmers and daily spent grain removal.

Additional Tasks and Responsibilities:

· Assist maintenance technician with equipment maintenance and repairs if needed.

· Identify and propose operational efficiencies to improve brewing process and production goals.

· Other duties as assigned by Founding Brewmaster

· Enlist the help of your team and/or Founding Brewmaster when necessary to accomplish the above tasks.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

· The Head Brewer will oversee all Three Notch’d Shift Brewers

Required Qualifications:

· Must be 21 years of age or older.

· Two or more years of experience supervising or managing employees

· Minimum of three to five years of experience brewing beer

· A High School diploma, GED or equivalent.

· Strong understanding of beer brewing and cellaring strategies.

· Knowledge of industry safe work practices.

· Ability to successfully motivate and coach others.

· Highly effective multi-tasker.

· A track record of building a team

· Flexibility to work any shifts needed throughout a 24-hour brew schedule.

Desired Qualifications:

· Experience using Consumer Packaged Goods Inventory software such as Ekos

· Professional brewing certificate preferred.

· Technical degree in Brewing, Engineering, Food Science or related field.

Work Environment:

· Ability to work in extreme cold, extreme heat, temperature changes.

· Industrial noises.

· Occasional exposure to wet conditions.

Equipment Used:

· Stainless steel, 2-vessel 20bbl system manufactured by Metalcraft Fabrications, Portland OR. Malt Silo, Grist Mill, Grist Hopper, 60bbl Hot Liquor Tank, Mashtun, Kettle, various centrifugal pumps.

· Pallet jacks, manual and electric; electric lift

· Lab equipment

· Computer

Travel Requirements:

· Some travel required (10-25%). This position will require travel to Three Notch’d Brewing production facilities to manage Shift Brewers.

Lifting Requirements:

· Ability to exert up to 55 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Able to occasionally lift up to 130 pounds.

Physical Requirements:

· Ability to stand for extended periods of time, walk, talk, hear, use hands to finger, grasp, handle or feel, push, pull, reach, crouch, kneel, crawl or bend, and perform repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists.

· High mental and visual attention required for planning difficult work methods and sequences to obtain size, shape, or physical qualities of product. AND/OR Extremely close visual attention such as making delicate adjustments to control high speed operations to exercise very precise muscular control.
