Description:

The Medical Education Learning Specialist serves as a key member of the Student Academic Success Team at A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA). This position supports osteopathic medical students through individualized academic coaching, learning strategy development, wellness-focused interventions, and collaborative student success programming. The Learning Specialist partners with faculty, advisors, counseling services, and student support teams to promote academic achievement, professional development, psychological well-being, and a strong sense of belonging across the medical education continuum.

The specialist provides proactive and responsive support for students experiencing academic difficulty, transitioning into rigorous learning environments, preparing for licensure examinations, or navigating personal and professional challenges that impact academic performance. The role emphasizes holistic student development, inclusive educational practices, and evidence-based learning interventions grounded in osteopathic medical education.

Academic Coaching & Student Support

  • Conduct individualized academic support meetings with osteopathic medical students.
  • Assess academic performance and identify barriers to learning, retention, time management, test-taking, and professional development.
  • Develop personalized learning plans, remediation strategies, and accountability structures for students identified as academically at-risk.
  • Provide coaching in evidence-based learning strategies, metacognition, self-regulated learning, clinical reasoning, and standardized test preparation.
  • Support students preparing for COMLEX-USA Level 1 and Level 2 examinations and other required licensure assessments.
  • Assist students with work/life integration, wellness planning, resilience, and academic stress management.

Educational Programming & Workshops

  • Design and facilitate workshops on academic success strategies, study skills, board preparation, time management, test-taking skills, wellness, and learning science principles.
  • Develop proactive student success interventions and educational programming across preclinical and clinical phases of medical education.
  • Create educational materials and resources that support diverse learning needs and promote learner engagement.
  • Collaborate with faculty and academic leadership to enhance student support initiatives and remediation programming.

Student Success Analytics & Program Development

  • Monitor academic progress and student engagement trends to identify opportunities for intervention and program improvement.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret student success and utilization data to assess program effectiveness.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of student success initiatives and retention strategies.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records related to student interactions and interventions while adhering to FERPA and institutional guidelines.

Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Collaborate with student achievement specialists, counseling services, ATSU accommodation liaison, ATSU Learning Resources and Student Affairs, faculty advisors, tutoring services, and community partners to ensure coordinated student support.
  • Advocate for inclusive learning environments and equitable student access to institutional resources.
  • Support initiatives that foster trust, belonging, professionalism, and community within ATSU-SOMA.
  • Participate in committees, student success initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaborations that advance holistic learner support.
Requirements:

Master’s degree required in education, counseling, psychology, higher education, learning sciences, health professions education, student affairs, or a related field.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in academic support, advising, coaching, student affairs, or related educational settings.
  • Experience providing services in at least three of the following areas:
  • Academic coaching and learning strategy development for didactic, clinical, and standardized testing environments.
  • Licensure examination preparation in osteopathic medicine or health sciences (e.g., COMLEX-USA, USMLE, PANCE, NPTE).
  • Work/life integration, time management, and student wellness support.
  • Medical, osteopathic, health sciences, or higher education environments.
  • Support for high-achieving learners and students in rigorous academic programs.
  • Experience supporting students with disabilities and accommodation implementation.
  • Experience working with diverse learners.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in undergraduate medical education.
  • Knowledge of learning theory, cognitive psychology, metacognition, and evidence-based study strategies.
  • Familiarity with remediation practices and competency-based medical education.
  • Experience facilitating workshops or group learning interventions.
  • Strong understanding of student wellness, burnout prevention, and holistic learner development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student sense of belonging initiatives in higher education.
  • Familiarity with community-based and distributed medical education models.
