Civil Engineer – Designer – EIT II in Columbia, South Carolina at Thomas & Hutton

Take on greater design ownership as you sharpen your technical judgment. As a Civil Designer II, you'll move beyond foundational tasks into independent design work, exercising judgment on design issues, coordinating the work of other technicians, and taking on your first regular client-facing responsibilities. You'll continue building toward licensure while expanding your command of Civil 3D and company design standards.

• Prepare routine design calculations and collect or prepare data for use by others in more complex engineering analyses and studies
• Exercise independent judgment and decision-making on design issues and concepts within an assigned scope
• Take responsibility for preparation and drafting of project plans, specifications, exhibits, and reports; coordinate the work of other technicians as part of a project team
• Prepare quantity and cost estimates, and use CADD tools to support construction plans and design considerations
• Apply and follow company graphic standards with moderate proficiency in company design standards
• Prepare permit applications and bid packages, and help ensure work stays within project schedule and budget
• Take on occasional client contact and coordination, including attending project meetings with clients, agencies, or contractors
• Communicate project status regularly to the Project Manager and assist in maintaining CADD standards and details

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology
• EIT certification strongly preferred
• 2+ years of experience designing land development projects using Civil 3D
• Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D software applications
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to interact directly with clients
• Proven ability to manage multiple assignments and prioritize workflow independently
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and reliable time management
