Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent, three years of experience as a Police Officer, completion of the State of Alabama Police Officer Standards and Training, must meet the minimum standards set by the state of Alabama for a Police Officer, possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a driving records sufficient to maintain insurance coverage under the University of South Alabama and satisfactory completion of a drug/alcohol and psychological screenings required prior to employment.
Preferred Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Job Description Summary
The University of South Alabama’s Police Department is seeking to hire a Police Corporal, Patrol. Interested candidates should apply to be considered.
Essential Functions
These are the job duties required of the position.
Essential Functions
  • Performs police/patrol activities in the capacity of Assistant Shift Supervisor.
  • Supervises officers in the absence of the Shift Sergeant to include: assigning duties, reviewing reports, addressing/reporting disciplinary issues to the Shift Sergeant and Patrol Captain.
  • Conducts an arrival for duty inspection of personnel’s appearance, physical/mental condition, and equipment for the purpose of determining fitness for duty and working condition, in the absence of the Shift Sergeant.
  • Qualifies, carries, uses and cares for his/her firearm and other related law enforcement equipment.
  • Acts as on-scene commander during major incidents in absence of supervisor.
  • Performs roving patrols on foot and in a vehicle.
  • Operates a two-way radio, computer and other law enforcement technology.
  • Investigates crimes, accidents, incidents and secures crime scenes.
  • Prepares detailed written reports and reviews the reports of police officers.
  • Acts in a supervisory capacity at special events when necessary.
  • Notifies supervisors of problems encountered, disciplinary problems and/or other related topics.
  • Ensures that warrants are signed and subpoenas are issued on each case.
  • Interviews victims, witnesses and takes statements.
  • Interrogates suspects involved in criminal activity and makes arrests when necessary.
  • Testifies in legal and administrative hearings.
  • Directs traffic.
  • Participates in awareness and crime prevention campaigns.
  • Regular and prompt attendance.
  • Ability to work schedule as required and overtime as required.
  • Related duties as required.
