Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Power Transformer Active Part Design Engineer responsible for the complete electrical and electromagnetic design of large oil-immersed power transformers up to 300 MVA and 345 kV.
The successful candidate should have strong theoretical and practical knowledge of transformer core, windings, insulation, impedance, losses, short-circuit forces, dielectric design, thermal performance, tap windings, and active-part construction.
The engineer will work from customer specifications through final design, manufacturing release, factory testing, and technical troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities
Perform complete electrical design of large power transformers.
Design transformer core, HV/LV windings, tertiary windings, regulating windings, and active-part arrangements.
Calculate:
Turns and flux density.
Core dimensions.
Conductor sizes and current density.
Transformer impedance.
No-load and load losses.
Eddy and stray losses.
Short-circuit forces.
Temperature rise.
Dielectric clearances.
Perform insulation coordination for transformers up to 345 kV class.
Design for lightning impulse, switching impulse where applicable, induced voltage, and partial-discharge requirements.
Select appropriate winding types such as disc, continuous disc, helical, layer, interleaved, and regulating windings.
Design internal electrical clearances and insulation systems.
Coordinate OLTC and regulating winding requirements.
Design or review tertiary and autotransformer arrangements where applicable.
Review customer specifications and guaranteed technical requirements.
Optimize transformer design for performance, material usage, losses, manufacturability, and cost.
Prepare and review winding, core, insulation, active-part, and electrical connection design information.
Support manufacturing during winding, core assembly, active-part assembly, drying, and tanking.
Support factory testing and investigate abnormal test results or design-related problems.
Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement of transformer design standards.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or Power Engineering.
Minimum 8 years of direct power transformer design experience preferred.
Strong experience with large oil-immersed power transformers.
Experience with transformers in the 230 kV–345 kV class strongly preferred.
Experience with designs approaching 300 MVA strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of transformer electromagnetic theory.
Knowledge of IEEE/ANSI and/or IEC transformer standards.
Experience with transformer design calculation software, Excel, CAD, and engineering systems.
Preferred Experience
Autotransformers.
Three-winding transformers.
Generator step-up transformers.
Utility transmission transformers.
OLTC applications.
FEA for electrical, magnetic, thermal, or short-circuit analysis.
